As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Masayuki Kato was a towering figure in our community. His innovative spirit and unwavering dedication to gaming, particularly in the realm of RPGs, left an indelible mark on countless gamers worldwide.
Noted game developer from Japan, Nihon Falcom, has shared the sad news about the demise of their chairman, Masayuki Kato. At the time of his passing, he was 78 years old and had established the company a remarkable 40 years ago in 1981.
Kato served as Falcom’s president before resigning in 2001. During his tenure, he initiated the creation of several role-playing franchises including The Legend of Heroes, Ys, Xanadu, Dragon Slayer, and Sorcerian, many of which are still active today.
Shinji Yamazaki followed Kato as a leader, but he was later replaced by the current president, Toshihiro Kondo, in the year 2007. Notably, Kato continued to serve as chairman until his passing on December 15th, 2024.
It goes without saying that Falcom wouldn’t exist without Kato, and his influence continues through the company’s ongoing work.
We extend our condolences to Kato’s family, friends, and everyone at Nihon Falcom.
