The popular animated series, Family Guy, has made a comeback on screens, airing fresh episodes as part of FOX’s winter schedule. Interestingly, the premiere of this new season has highlighted one notable flaw in the films Top Gun and its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of Family Guy for over a year now, as it was initially slated to return in Fall 2024. However, FOX decided to postpone the series, and now, Family Guy is headlining the Animation Domination block each week until winter’s end.
The opening episode of Season 23 for Family Guy began by satirically reimagining both Top Gun and its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, in a fresh spin-off titled “Fat Gun.” Similar to past seasons where Family Guy devoted an entire half hour to a full-length movie parody (such as “PeTerminator”), this premiere places each character within the movie universe. Moreover, it humorously highlights one of the significant drawbacks of Top Gun: Maverick, namely the loss of key characters due to the long production time for the sequel.
What Happens in Family Guy Season 23’s Premiere?
The Season 23 opener of Family Guy, titled “Fat Gun,” opens with a humorous reinterpretation of the movie Top Gun. In this version, Peter takes on the role of Maverick and Joe is Goose. Tragically, Joe meets his end during an errant training exercise where Peter attempts to adjust their jet’s radio station. Although the episode generally follows the plotlines of both movies, it introduces a running joke by mirroring the absence of the lead actresses from Top Gun: Maverick in the episode’s storyline.
In the show, there was a recurring joke where Peter kept mentioning that specific characters would appear in the sequel. He even went so far as to assure everyone that Charlie (Kelly McGinnis’ character) and Carole (Meg Ryan) would undeniably reappear in the sequel. However, when the sequel parody aired, their characters were completely written out of it. The unexpected turn was that Charlie and Carole ended up kidnapping Peter and the rest because they were displeased about being excluded from the sequel. But instead of fulfilling their promises about their return, they were given more empty assurances.
Family Guy Takes Aim at Top Gun: Maverick
Reframing my perspective as an avid movie enthusiast, I must admit that one point often raised against the blockbuster hit, Top Gun: Maverick, was the absence of key characters from the original film. This critique was even humorously addressed by Family Guy in a hilarious parody episode, where it became a central plot point. With this amusing spin now part of the series, I’m genuinely looking forward to what the upcoming season has in store!
Starting this Sunday evening at 8:00PM ET, Fox will be broadcasting Season 23 of “Family Guy” as part of the Animation Domination block for Winter 2025’s midseason schedule. If you can’t watch it live, you can catch up on Hulu the following day. And if you want to delve into the series’ past, you can find all 22 previous seasons on channels like Adult Swim, Comedy Central, FXX, and more.
