As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for Eastern European dystopian settings and tactical games that push me to the brink of my moral compass, Chains of Freedom has firmly caught my attention. The trailer’s ominous tone, coupled with the promise of danger, deceit, and moral dilemmas, is an irresistible combination for this old dog.
There’s something about the phrase “Eastern European dystopia” that really grabs my attention. Hearing it would make me swivel my head instantly, even in a bustling crowd. So, it’s no surprise that I perked up when I heard about the world premiere trailer for Chains of Freedom at The PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted. This game is promising a captivating turn-based tactics experience set in a made-up, dystopian Eastern European nation. It’s also offering “peril, treachery, and ethical quandaries.” Those are exactly the elements I’m drawn to!
The trailer for Chains of Freedom begins by saying “when a meteorite hit,” and things only deteriorate from there for the inhabitants. Not only did the meteorite leave a massive scar on Earth, it also brought a disease along that led to chaos afterwards. We witness roads filled with wrecked and deserted vehicles, damaged infrastructure, and then the game reveals a grim truth: humanity’s response to this catastrophe was to embrace fascism.
It appears the segment of humanity you belong to is currently under the control of an autocrat who takes great pride in statues of himself. You’ll find yourself as part of his elite squad, fully equipped in military gear, engaging in a strategic, turn-based battle against supposed mutants, dissidents, and outsiders that supposedly endanger your nation.
Does the storyline sound heroic to you? It doesn’t to me. As explained by the developers at Nordcurrent, the game’s narrative will unfold around a tangled web involving a renegade scientist, mind-altering serums, and a government on the brink of collapse. One has to ponder if perhaps the rogue scientist has a valid argument, or if he’s so malevolent that even other wickedness seems benign by comparison.
The assortment of gadgets at your disposal for deciphering the enigmatic plot by the rogue scientist is diverse, numerous, and not adhering to standard safety regulations. As suggested in the synopsis, equip your team with a variety of weapons such as hooks, axes, flamethrowers, and mortars. Moreover, you can ethically enhance your soldiers through the application of “biocrystals,” which grant them unique skills.
The game appears to blend elements reminiscent of XCOM and Stalker, two games I often refer to, with an added eastern European post-apocalyptic atmosphere. You’ll notice that the enemies are more fantastical and adorned with crystals than you might expect in either series. Expect plenty of tactical maneuvers like taking cover, strategizing, and perhaps missing crucial shots, along with the inevitable instances of… well, meeting an untimely end. The latter is a recurring theme in this game.
Chains of Freedom doesn’t yet have a set release date, but aims to be out in 2025. You should be able to see more of it on Steam shortly after the show.
