Shadow of Mordor, generates dynamic narratives for each playthrough by providing antagonists with distinctive personalities. These characters react differently to your actions within the game world based on these unique traits.
In the original game, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, the studio developed an intriguing system that fans were looking forward to seeing again in their upcoming DC collaboration. However, with the project’s cancellation, it appears the unique mechanism might no longer be a part of future games.
It’s particularly aggravating to learn that Warner Bros managed to secure a patent for the feature back in 2015, and it won’t expire until August 11th, 2036. That means we still have over a decade to wait!
The patent language, though somewhat general, outlines a game system where artificial characters (NPCs) dynamically adjust based on your actions. These characters are part of an internal hierarchy that can shift according to your gameplay, and they may adapt their looks or behavior in response to your actions.
In essence, anyone seeking to develop a comparable system or mechanism would essentially need to acquire a license from Warner Bros. However, it’s feasible for them to devise variations of the design that aren’t an exact replica.
It’s possible that other studios under the same publisher might utilize the system in the future. For instance, a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy could potentially make use of it, or even an upcoming Batman game. However, given that Monolith is now closed, it seems unrealistic that this system will be revisited for some time. It’s unfortunate because it had great potential!
