A fresh installment of Mario Kart has been unveiled together with the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. As of now, this new Mario Kart game doesn’t bear a title, and just like its companion console, it lacks a confirmed release date. The initial sneak peek at the first substantial Mario Kart game since Mario Kart 8 is merely a fleeting glimpse into the game, lasting only a few seconds. Unfortunately, there isn’t much information gleaned from this brief footage, but we do catch a glimpse of several racers in the game preview, including Donkey Kong. Interestingly, Donkey Kong appears to have undergone a makeover.
In the latest edition of Mario Kart, Nintendo has revamped Donkey Kong’s appearance to resemble how he looks in the recent Mario film. Interestingly, this new design is closer to the original Donkey Kong style compared to the more contemporary image most people associate with the character.
Currently, it seems that Donkey Kong stands out as the character with a more exaggerated, cartoon-like style, reminiscent of the characters in the Mario movie. Some people also think Mario shares some similarities with his film version, but if so, those changes are less obvious compared to the striking transformation of Donkey Kong. (From a fan’s perspective)
Just as anticipated, opinions among Nintendo enthusiasts are split regarding this alteration. Many ardent Nintendo followers were displeased with Donkey Kong’s appearance in the Mario film, and they share similar sentiments about this change as well.
A fan is expressing their concern about the changes made to Donkey Kong’s appearance in Mario Kart 9, stating that he now looks strange compared to his previous design in Mario Kart 8. Another fan agrees and suggests that the developers should revert back to the ’90s Rare design for Donkey Kong as they find the new design unappealing.
Another enthusiast chimes in, saying, “They messed up Donkey Kong for the latest Mario Kart. It’s just unbelievable! Even though I didn’t particularly care for him, the new look is atrocious.
The reason behind Nintendo altering Donkey Kong’s design remains unclear, though it may hint at a broader shift in their artistic direction. Interestingly, the rest of the content presented appears similar to Mario Kart 8, albeit with some enhancements. Only Donkey Kong seems to have undergone a change in appearance.
