Initially unveiling Bungie’s upcoming first-person action game, Marathon, left a feeling of confidence in its development. Crafting a successful shooter is challenging, and for this new addition to the 1994 series, the visuals and gameplay mechanics seemed poised to capture a sleek, futuristic aesthetic that would appeal to multiplayer combat enthusiasts. However, as Bungie embarks on a new chapter following their extensive work on the Destiny franchise, the development of Marathon appears to be facing difficulties. Amidst growing internet controversy, Bungie is currently under scrutiny due to allegations from ex-employees, with some advocating for a delay in the game’s release.
As an ardent enthusiast, I can’t help but share the thrilling journey of “Marathon”, a game that was unveiled during the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023 and sparked much enthusiasm among viewers. However, following Bungie’s restructuring, which led to the dismissal of 17% of their workforce, the project seemed to go quiet.
But, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, cryptic posters started appearing on social media platforms, hinting at Marathon’s resurgence in a gameplay livestream held in April. Yet, the beta test in April was met with a somewhat lukewarm response from players, leaving many in anticipation of its success.
Recently, the fire has been fanned even higher due to allegations made by Antireal, a former Bungie artist, who claimed on social media that the company had engaged in art theft, following an alpha playtest featuring designs strikingly similar to their previous works.
This intriguing turn of events has left us all on the edge of our seats, eagerly awaiting more updates about Marathon’s future and Bungie’s response to these allegations.
As a gamer, I can’t help but feel let down when things don’t go as planned, and it seems like many of us are feeling this way right now. On one popular platform, often referred to as ‘Twitter’, a fellow gaming enthusiast under the handle Pwnstar voiced their worries about the situation too.
It’s highly unlikely there will be a significant delay for this Marathon, and even if one occurred, it wouldn’t resolve their issues. The game requires substantial changes to its appeal and gameplay dynamics, and lacks a unique selling point to distinguish it from other games in the genre. They really need something that sets it apart. It seems years of dedicated work will be required.
Given the ongoing controversy surrounding recent allegations, Bungie had planned a stream that was originally intended to showcase gameplay, but due to the situation, they altered it. It’s plausible that Antireal’s work remains in the game as the reason for this change. However, the presentation during the stream fell flat, with some even advocating for the event to be either postponed or canceled altogether. User ThePatriot117 also expressed their thoughts on the matter.
Listened for approximately 30 seconds to the live broadcast of that marathon, and I must express my thoughts: Delay the game, buddy,” they commented. “The initial phase was enjoyable, but it didn’t take long before it lost its charm. It seems the game requires more time to mature and reach its full potential, and evidently, a great deal of work needs to be done to counteract the negative feedback.
As more enthusiasts of extraction shooter games seem to be losing interest in Marathon, the controversy swirling around Bungie’s upcoming game has had a negative impact instead of positive. Although Bungie is attempting to quell art theft allegations by initiating a comprehensive review of Marathon assets, it appears that people are now more focused on pushing back the planned September release for this premium game rather than waiting for its launch.
The game titled “Marathon” is set to launch on September 23, 2025, and it will be playable on PCs, PlayStation 5 consoles, and Xbox Series X|S systems.
