Fans Outraged Over DOOM: The Dark Ages Dropping This Key Feature

In recent times, the intense action and triumph of vanquishing foes in DOOM may not meet the high expectations of long-time fans as much as before. At the Xbox Developers Showcase last week, the unveiling of id Software and Bethesda’s DOOM: The Dark Ages trailer offered a glimpse into what the teams have been developing for the new installment in the DOOM series. This prequel will place Doom Slayer within a dark fantasy setting steeped in bloody medieval times, laying the groundwork for 2016’s DOOM and DOOM Eternal. Although the exclusive Collector’s Edition of DOOM: The Dark Ages, which includes a two-day early access code, should appease the desire for more combat, some are expressing concerns about the absence of one particular aspect from DOOM Eternal that added to the thrill of overcoming your adversaries.

For enthusiasts of the contemporary DOOM series games, such as DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, the character Doom Slayer demonstrated his raw power through Glory Kills. These unique maneuvers occur when players inflict sufficient damage on an enemy, causing them to ‘stagger’, allowing players to move in close for a gruesome kill that’s both thrilling (or crushing) to watch. Tactically, these kills were beneficial because they always produced health boosts, which proved crucial as you battled the unrelenting waves of demons. The series emphasized this Glory Kill action so much that it became necessary to finish off boss battles exclusively with Glory Kills.

DOOM Eternal Fans Are Bothered by DOOM: The Dark Ages’ Glory Kills Absence

Is anyone else bothered by the lack of “true” glory kills?

DOOM enthusiasts voiced their frustration on social media over the absence of authentic Glory Kills in the game. On Reddit’s r/Doom page, user Icredibilis initiated a discussion, expressing appreciation for the revised gameplay mechanics while pointing out the potential shortcoming of not being able to perform Glory Kills with all the new equipment. They shared a video clip showing Doom Slayer executing a kill on a Hell Knight that wasn’t as visually impactful as previous games had depicted it, highlighting the possibility for improvement in this area.

In reaction to the post, numerous other commentators concurred with the statement. User Toucaan_Froot remarked, “Indeed, to some extent. I’m a fan of the concept of decoupling, but I’d prefer the enemies to be torn apart a bit more before being ejected. Ideally, I’m expecting something akin to the gore in Shadow Warrior 3, with dismembering demons and shooting off body parts. Perhaps they could increase the impact frames on Glory Kills? They seem rather mild in comparison.

Although some players are disappointed by the absence of extravagant Glory Kills, many others remain optimistic regarding the gameplay aspects beyond violent attacks. Reddit user ThespainException commented, “I’m not overly thrilled about this change, but I’ll reserve judgment until I try it out. I trust Id to believe they have a good reason for this.” Some players discussed how Glory Kills sometimes interrupted the flow of gameplay but provided a momentary pause during intense situations.

User Ascending_Orange expressed enthusiasm about the gameplay, commenting that he anticipates a smoother experience. He appreciates how Glory Kills function well in 2016/Eternal, allowing players to pause and think, but with the deliberate speed of The Darksiders Acceleration, being able to sever a Hell Knight’s arm (reducing its attacks and replenishing ammo during battle) before focusing on another demon seems enjoyable.

Although Glory Kills in “DOOM: The Dark Ages” might not be as extreme as earlier games, devotees of DOOM have faith that id Software will create an exhilarating expansion to the franchise and are eager to discover what awaits them.

DOOM: The Dark Ages releases on May 15, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
