Fantastic Beasts Star Suggests Franchise Is Dead Due to the Harry Potter TV Show

As a devoted Potterhead since the dawn of my magical journey, it’s heartbreaking to witness the apparent demise of the enchanting world of Fantastic Beasts. I’ve grown up with Newt Scamander and Albus Dumbledore, and their tales have been an integral part of my life. The news that we might have seen the last of them on the big screen leaves me feeling like I’ve just lost a dear friend.

It appears that the Fantastic Beasts series, particularly the movies featuring Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne), may be coming to an end. In a recent interview with ComicBook, Redmayne hinted that his character might not appear on the big screen again following Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to rebrand the Wizarding World franchise as just Harry Potter. Moreover, Jude Law, who played a younger version of Dumbledore in two Fantastic Beasts films, has indicated that Warner Bros. may have scrapped plans for the fourth and fifth installments of the Fantastic Beasts series.

Law stated to Variety, “It appears to be paused for now.” Guessing, since they’re currently working on Harry Potter as a television series, they may focus their efforts there. I haven’t received any indication of anything upcoming in the works.

Prior to the debut of the first “Fantastic Beasts” in 2016, J.K. Rowling, author and series creator, had already revealed a five-movie plan for the spin-offs, which took place almost a century before the Harry Potter films’ events. The Fantastic Beasts series, derived from a fictional textbook within the Harry Potter universe, earned $814 million at the global box office with its initial release. However, the sequel, “The Crimes of Grindelwald,” released in 2018, saw a decrease in earnings to $654 million. The latest installment, “The Secrets of Dumbledore” (released in 2021), holds the title for the lowest-grossing movie in the Wizarding World series with worldwide earnings of $407 million.

Redmayne stated to ComicBook, “I believe they may not see Newt again.” This is a straightforward translation, maintaining the meaning while making it easier to read.

In the year 2020, Redmayne expressed his disagreement with Rowling’s controversial tweets about transgender people, joining fellow Harry Potter cast members Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Evanna Lynch, and Bonnie Wright in publicly criticizing the author’s statements. J.K. Rowling penned the first two Fantastic Beasts films and collaborated with longtime Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves on co-writing the third movie.

The live-action Harry Potter TV series on HBO marks the first greenlit project in this genre since the release of Secrets of Dumbledore. According to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, the Harry Potter franchise is a top priority for their company following the success of the eight-movie saga which earned approximately $8 billion between 2001 and 2011.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced that the upcoming series will introduce a fresh cast to captivate a new wave of fans, maintaining the intricate details and beloved characters from the Harry Potter universe that have enchanted readers for more than two decades. Season by season, this series aims to share these magical tales with audiences worldwide, while the original films remain at the heart of the franchise, accessible for viewing everywhere.

In the upcoming series, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”, set to debut on December 3rd on Disney+, Law will be portraying the character Force user Jod Na Nawood.
