As a movie enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the saga of Fantastic Beasts has been quite the rollercoaster ride. I vividly remember the anticipation leading up to the release of the first film back in 2016, and how it brought a spark of hope to the Harry Potter universe. However, much like the fading magic of a once-powerful spell, the series seemed to lose its luster with each subsequent installment.
Supporters of the Fantastic Beasts movie series have had a rather challenging time recently. The initial release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2016 was met with enthusiasm, as it expanded the Harry Potter universe. Initially planned as the first of five films, the story would not only follow Newt Scamander but also delve deeply into the histories of Grindelwald and Voldemort. However, things changed after that. Following two more movies that sparked debate, it seems the Fantastic Beasts series has reached its end.
It seems neither “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” nor “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” managed to match the critical or financial success of the initial film in the series. Although fans persistently hoped for a continuation, actor Eddie Redmayne has largely closed the door on that possibility.
In conversation with ComicBook, Redmayne hinted that the character of New Scamander, as seen in the movies, may no longer appear on the big screen.
Redmayne indicated to us that “it seems likely” Newt won’t appear anymore, but he cautioned this was his understanding. He added that for definite information, one should consult Warner Bros. and J.K Rowling, but as far as he knew, that’s the end of it. However, Redmayne mentioned there might be a brief appearance of Newt in the Universal world in Florida they’re developing, offering a glimpse into what Newt was doing in Paris.
It’s not unexpected for Harry Potter enthusiasts that the earnings and enthusiasm for the recent Fantastic Beasts films have decreased, given the lower box office revenue of The Secrets of Dumbledore compared to the initial Fantastic Beasts movie from six years ago. However, it’s worth noting that The Secrets of Dumbledore received considerably better reviews from both critics and fans compared to The Crimes of Grindelwald.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, it appeared for quite some time that the Fantastic Beasts series might steer the Harry Potter franchise on-screen for the near future. However, as things have taken an unexpected turn, Warner Bros. has taken a puzzling step by opting to reboot the entire Harry Potter universe as a television production. This decision involves recasting all the film roles and essentially narrating the same captivating tale we’ve already experienced in our books and movies.
Although Eddie Redmayne won’t reappear as Newt Scamander in the Harry Potter universe, you can catch him in the upcoming “Day of the Jackal,” debuting on Peacock on November 14th.
