Fantastic Four Movie in Crisis? Last-Minute Reshoots Spark Fears of Another Marvel Flop

Marvel’s “Fantastic Four: First Steps” is venturing into risky grounds with late-stage reshoots, barely months before its premiere. With less than three months left until its planned release on July 25, 2025, the much-awaited Marvel comeback is being re-filmed in Los Angeles once more, which for some, brings back memories of a past mishap for Marvel Studios and Disney.

Actress Julia Garner portrays Shalla-Bal during supplementary filming sessions for ‘THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS’ at a Los Angeles set.

In the latest on-set snaps, Julia Garner is seen portraying Shalla-Bal, the feminine Silver Surfer, adorned in a white gown with intricate cosmic designs and boasting long flowing blonde locks. Conspicuously missing are any indications of her Silver Surfer transformation – no metallic skin, no surfboard, nor motion-capture clothing. Instead, she stands somberly gazing out at the coastline. This absence might suggest that post-production team is incorporating flashback sequences featuring the female Surfer at a later stage in the filmmaking process.

As a film enthusiast, I must admit, the portrayal of this particular character leaves me intrigued. It seems as though the creators are still in the process of defining their vision for this figure, which only adds to the mystery and anticipation surrounding their future appearances on screen.

Too Late for Reshoots? Yes.

In a movie like Fantastic Four, packed with visual effects, it’s unusual and highly concerning for reshoots to happen so close to its release date. The production of such films often involves several months of Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) rendering, particularly when characters like Galactus, portrayed by Ralph Ineson, and cosmic Heralds such as the Silver Surfer are involved. Scenes shot now will immediately be sent to the Visual Effects (VFX) pipeline under tight deadlines.

This is exactly how quality suffers. And we’ve seen it before from Marvel as recently as this year.

In an unusual turn of events, the movie “Captain America: Brave New World” faced extensive reshoots close to its release date, which seemed to expose every flaw. The storyline felt disjointed, the CGI effects were uneven, and the rhythm was off-balance, leading to one of the poorest-performing summer Marvel films ever. Despite a strong marketing campaign and a popular patriotic image, it failed miserably at the box office.

Currently, it appears that the “Fantastic Four” is exhibiting similar issues during these advanced reshoots. Although we don’t know the exact scope of these reshoots, it’s concerning that filming is still happening at this late stage in production.

It’s been suggested by those in the know that “First Steps” could conclude with the annihilation of the team’s timeline, which might lead to “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars.” If accurate, Marvel seems to be making a significant shift in its storytelling approach to simplify multiversal aspects after years of intricate storytelling that some viewers have found confusing, and declining interest among the audience.

However, such a shift in direction could be risky given how advanced the production process already is. It seems more like a hasty attempt to fix issues, which is reminiscent of the late alterations that ultimately led to the failure of Brave New World.

The Writing Team Shuffle

Let’s not forget: Fantastic Four has cycled through a small army of writers, including:

  • Avatar 2’s Josh Friedman
  • WandaVision’s Cam Squires
  • And now Black Widow’s Eric Pearson brought in for a “final polish”

The fact itself suggests a certain level of unpredictability in creativity. Add to that the reshoots for the Fantastic Four, and it seems we’re once again facing a Marvel production in need of urgent revisions.

Conclusion: Trouble in the Multiverse

Marvel Studios has faced some instability since the release of Endgame. Each new project sparks anticipation among fans that the next one will bring a return to their usual high standards. However, Fantastic Four: First Steps seems to be shaping up like Captain America: Brave New World—an overblown, heavy-handed, last-minute rework with significant costs and hasty production.

Initially, this was meant to mark a new beginning for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, if these reshoots are any sign, it could potentially become another setback or misfortune instead.
