In the comic book “Fantastic Four” issue 280 from 1985, the question was posed: Was it Sue Richards or Malice who was at play? This enigmatic figure known as Malice, a malevolent supervillain capable of manipulating emotions, had previously taken control of Sue following her miscarriage in issue 267. This made Sue, a powerful member of the Fantastic Four, turn against her own family.
In this rephrased version: Sue, disguised as Malice, overcame She-Hulk (temporarily replacing The Thing). However, she was then faced by her brother Johnny and husband Reed, who managed to liberate Sue from her malevolent character. Psychologically traumatized due to Psycho-Man’s cruel actions that targeted her emotional core, Sue endured further agony as Psycho-Man orchestrated scenarios causing her to believe the demise of the Fantastic Four.
This version aims to maintain the original meaning while using more natural and easy-to-read language.
In issue #284 of Fantastic Four, Sue underwent an emotional rollercoaster due to her Psycho-Ray ordeal, experiencing overwhelming doubts, fears, and hatred. Consequently, she used her powers against the source of her distress – disabling his autonomic nervous system in the end. Notably, this was Sue’s last appearance as the Invisible Girl; she decided to reintroduce herself as the Invisible Woman instead.
Despite only appearing sporadically as her dominatrix character, there’s a chance this persona may pop up again in an unanticipated location: the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Actress Vanessa Kirby, who portrays pregnant Sue in Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps, hints that Sue’s suppressed feelings could one day take the form of Malice, as depicted in the comics.
As a fan, I’m excited to share that during my conversation with Director Matt Shakman, we both agreed on the lack of mothers with babies in typical superhero archetypes for women. One aspect I admire most about Sue’s history is her transformation into Malice, where her dark side emerges. I was captivated by this part of her life and wanted to ensure that traces of her Malice persona were woven into the character, so she wasn’t just portrayed as a stereotypical sweet, good mother.
She added, “I’ve always found the complexities of femininity intriguing, questioning how one can embody all aspects. Not just the strong, indomitable, powerful woman, but also a nurturing mother, whose act of giving birth is heroic in its own right. I appreciate these characters for their authenticity, portraying real people in a family that bickers and stumbles, trying to resolve issues and making mistakes.
In the movie “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” hitting theaters on July 25th, Kirby joins forces with Pedro Pascal (playing Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), Joseph Quinn (portraying Johnny Storm/Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (as Ben Grimm/the Thing). They will then reappear in the summer of next year’s “Avengers: Doomsday.
