Fantastic Four's Jessica Alba Offers Advice for Vanessa Kirby Taking on Sue Storm Role

As a gamer with a deep-rooted love for Marvel and its iconic characters, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and anticipation upon hearing Jessica Alba’s advice to Vanessa Kirby on stepping into the role of Sue Storm. While Alba’s experiences may have been tinged with the successes and pitfalls of early Marvel cinematic endeavors, her words resonate with me as someone who has also dabbled in virtual superhero adventures.

The filming of Marvel’s “Fantastic Four: First Steps” is underway in the UK, making it exciting to catch up with veterans of the franchise like Jessica Alba. Alba, who played Sue Storm (also known as The Invisible Woman) in the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four movies, recently shared some wisdom with Vanessa Kirby, the actress taking on the role of Sue Storm in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s reboot. During a chat for her new Roku series “Honest Renovations,” Alba offered guidance to Kirby.

When queried on what essential information Kirby should be acquainted with regarding his entry into the realm of The Fantastic Four and the Marvel fanbase, Alba offered the following insights:

“I think just have fun. The fans are so amazing. It was probably one of the best times of my life, going around the world and meeting all of the people that just love The Fantastic Four and love these comic books and can relate to these stories, Alba shared with Collider. “That, to me, and to be able to meet so many different people that you can touch and bring joy to them, I would say that’s first and foremost for anyone who gets the honor of playing one of these awesome characters. So I’d tell her to just have fun and soak in the moments.”

In the 2000s, Tim Story’s Fantastic Four movies are now recognized as trailblazers for the era of blockbuster superhero films, coming after Wesley Snipes’ Blade, X-Men (2000), and Spider-Man (2002). 20th Century Fox envisioned the Fantastic Four as a robust intellectual property to establish its own franchise universe, alongside their X-Men movies, as they were the only Marvel properties owned by the studio at that time. However, director Tim Story (Barbershop) didn’t quite achieve the monumental success of Spider-Man or X-Men with his Fantastic Four films; the property lay dormant while Fox expanded the X-Men movie universe, and eventually rebooted it with X-Men: First Class in 2011. The studio attempted a similar approach with Fantastic Four, enlisting Josh Trank (Chronicle) for a full-fledged reboot (Fant4stic), but this effort failed dismally at the box office, earning only $167 million on a budget of $120 million.

Not only did the film’s financial losses prove detrimental, but the scandalous tales surrounding its production also caused significant embarrassment. There have been whispers about strained relations between Trank and Fox during the movie’s creation. Some accounts portray Trank as unpredictable on set, while others suggest his initial version of the film was too gloomy for Fox executives. This allegedly led to a series of controversial reshoots that fundamentally altered the latter half of the movie, producing a final cut that was a confusing mishmash of disparate ideas, moods, and aesthetics. The reboot was met with such disfavor that Fantastic Four has yet to resurface in the ensuing decade – despite the unstoppable growth of the Marvel Studios franchise.

Indeed, although Alba’s words to Kirby were kind, it’s likely that her actual experience making the movie, which included some casting issues, and interacting with fans differed significantly from the negative reputation that Vanessa Kirby and the rest of the cast must now deal with and overturn.

Fantastic Four: First Steps has a release date of July 25, 2025.
