As a seasoned critic with a penchant for the profound and a soft spot for the quirky, I must say that the current crop of media offerings has me utterly smitten. Allow me to share my thoughts on a few gems that have caught my discerning eye (and ear).

Articles of Interest

Among my favorite podcast hosts is Avery Trufelman. She’s the host of “Articles of Interest,” a series that comes out every few months, delving into what our clothing choices reveal about us. She’s not only intellectually versatile but also has a voice that can subtly convey sarcasm, emphasis, and nuance.

When contemplating Manchester during the 1990s, thoughts often revolve around Oasis or the Hacienda nightclub. However, in this compelling mini-series, host David Scott, a proud Mancunian, shifts focus from pop culture to a darker period – the IRA’s largest bomb explosion near the Arndale shopping center in 1996. The narrative delves into the rise of gang culture and the destructive effects of street drugs, offering a gritty perspective on this influential decade in Manchester’s history. ANNA JONES

Hey there fellow film enthusiasts! I’ve been diving deep into the intriguing, often overlooked past of the NYPD, as explored by Chenjerai Kumanyika in his enlightening series. In the 1830s, it’s a shocking revelation that police officers were paid for kidnapping black New Yorkers off the streets, labeling them as “runaway slaves”. The early episodes are rife with violence, corruption, and bigotry – a disheartening but crucial part of understanding this history. However, the resilience and resistance shown by abolitionists, anti-slavery activists, and everyday citizens gives us reason to hope that the rest of this series will shed light on the struggles and triumphs of those fighting against oppressive systems. Regardless of its label as “for those who dislike wine, snacks, or socializing,” this charmingly humorous podcast by comedians Sara Pascoe and Cariad Lloyd is welcoming to all listeners. Featuring friends like Roisin Conaty and authors such as David Nicholls, the hosts delve into a different release in each episode, beginning with Standard Deviation by Katherine Heiney. The candidness and lack of pretension make it appealing even for the most introverted book enthusiasts, ensuring they’ll return for more. MATT GLASBY
