Fat Joe is mourning another tremendous loss.
The rapper known as “Lean Back” shared the news of his mother, Marie Del-Carmen Cartagena, passing away at the age of 77, just a week prior to Mother’s Day.
Her death reason wasn’t disclosed publicly. Marie sadly passed away just under three months following the demise of Ernesto Cartagena, who was Fat Joe’s father and lived to be 89 years old.
The hip-hop artist, whose genuine name is Joseph Antonio Cartagena, posted on Instagram on May 3rd: “This is truly one, rest in peace to the woman who welcomed me into this world. She may not have had much, but she gave us all she had. Anyone who knew my mother knows her heart was pure gold.
In the Bronx, NY, Marie had lived and raised her family for a long time, and she “resisted leaving the housing projects” as stated by Fat Joe. He further mentioned that even when he himself had financial means, this did not sway Marie from staying put.
The 54-year-old said his mom “loved her community, she loved her people.”
He mentioned that he’s deeply grateful to his God for allowing her to be part of his life for so long. Sadly, she passed away 60 years ago due to a broken heart, and more recently, the man she was with also departed. His father always wished to be with her in the end.
In conclusion, the rapper posted a touching tribute filled with pictures of Marie alongside Fat Joe, his father, and other loved ones, expressing his feelings by saying, “Until we meet again, Mommy, you were my universe, my core, my all. I’ll strive to make you proud every day.
Fat Joe had also paid tribute to his dad on social media following his death.
In simple terms, “It’s with great sadness that I share the news of my father’s demise, who was fondly known as ‘ERNESTO AKA CUBA.’ He will forever hold a special place in my heart. I wrote this on Instagram in February. This period has been difficult, but I’m not asking for sympathy. Instead, I want to honor my father, whom I consider a legend. To my mother, wife, brothers, and sisters, I express my love for you all, and our bond will always remain strong.
