FBC: Firebreak Being Multiplayer is a Chance for Remedy to Do Something New – Director

Remedy’s game director Mike Kayatta, working on the cooperative shooter “FBC: Firebreak“, has disclosed the reason behind their decision to focus on multiplayer instead of single-player games. In an interview with Games Radar, Kayatta discussed how this move provided a fresh approach for Remedy to narrate their stories.

Kayatta mentions that for them, the multiplayer aspect of FBC: Firebreak is largely unexplored territory. They acknowledge there’s much they need to master to fulfill its potential, but their enthusiasm and determination are high as they venture into this new realm.

Kayatta continues by explaining that multiplayer games often provide a higher potential for spontaneous narrative development, an outcome solely dependent on player interactions, thus influencing and molding their game environment.

Kayatta remarked, “Sharing a game world with others introduces an unexpected element of magic. It’s the human factor that adds unpredictability and a one-of-a-kind narrative to our games, something we can’t achieve in a strictly linear ‘hero’s journey’ style.

The studio emphasizes that they’ll keep focusing on creating engaging single-player games with compelling narratives similar to “Control” and the upcoming “Alan Wake 2”. While “FBC: Firebreak”, being a multiplayer game, allows them to delve into fresh concepts.

Moving forward, our primary goal is still to create engaging, solo play environments. However, we believe now is the right moment to explore extending the Remedy universe into shared areas and venture into uncharted territories.

The game titled “Firebreak” was initially unveiled back in October. As the name suggests, it places players in the role of an emergency responder within the Federal Bureau of Control. Previously, Kayatta described this title as a standalone entity, distinct from being a DLC or a sequel to “Control,” despite sharing the same environment.

In simpler terms, throughout the game, players will have the opportunity to delve into The Oldest House, serving as the FBC’s headquarters. During their adventure, they can utilize special items that have been altered, which, according to Remedy, function similarly to ‘ultimates’, offering unique abilities for the player.

In “FBC: Firebreak,” the game is set several years following the events of “Control.” Consequently, you’ll notice some significant changes in the various areas within The Oldest House. The developers have shared that these familiar locations will be completely redesigned and reinvented for “FBC: Firebreak.

As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled to share that the highly anticipated game, “Firebreak (FBC)”, is scheduled for release in 2025. This action-packed adventure will be available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Unlike some live-service games, Firebreak won’t have a continuous online presence, but it will still receive post-launch support through content updates.

In addition to Firebreak, Remedy is also working diligently on “Control 2”. For those of us craving more immersive single-player experiences from this brilliant studio, these developments are music to our ears! Interestingly, while Control 2 boasts a larger budget of €50 million, Firebreak’s development budget is set at a more moderate €30 million. Can’t wait to delve deeper into both of these exciting titles!
