FC 25 producer talks professional fouls, diving and learning from Volta

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of football gaming under my belt, I must say that the upcoming FC 25 has piqued my interest significantly. Having played every iteration since the first FIFA back on the Sega Genesis, I can confidently say that the changes being introduced in this new version are both intriguing and much-needed.

Upcoming FC 25 is poised to introduce a multitude of significant updates for Electronic Arts’ football series. We were fortunate enough to put questions to one of its primary developers about this exciting development!

Have a look at the video displayed here, or catch it on the TopMob Gaming YouTube channel, to find out directly from Senior Producer Sam Rivera about the upcoming adjustments and modifications in FC 25.

At the Gamescom conference held in August 2024, Rivera chose to bring up the first modification he deemed important: the introduction of Rush, an innovative 5-a-side gameplay, which is slated to take over from the soon-to-be-phased-out Volta mode.

Rivera elaborated that Rush has been constructed with valuable insights and intriguing findings drawn from Volta.

He shared that the team members expressed their preference for sticking with their chosen game modes rather than trying out Volta, as it was a standalone feature. Consequently, they’ve integrated Rush into various modes to make it more accessible and appealing to players.

He also touched on the fact that Rush has a new penalty mechanic, and that its pitch size is quite different to that of Volta. Plus, its core gameplay is closer to the honed 11-v-11 experience that you’re used to.

Moving on to another topic, we also discussed the somewhat contentious rule change regarding professional fouls in the sport.

In a conversation, Rivera explained that “professional fouls play a crucial role in football.

He added, “It’s happening a lot […] there’s some very important football moments recently where a professional foul changed the direction of a match. So we thought, ‘Well, it’s part of football. We want it in the game.”

Could Rivera view this addition as an opening to further explore questionable football techniques, such as feigning fouls (also known as diving)?

He told us in no uncertain terms: “Not really. Diving, of course, we’ve heard it before. It hasn’t been a priority. It’s not something that we are actively looking to do. Any type of cheating, something like that, that’s not the goal.

In essence, performing professional ‘fouls’ is essentially about preventing someone. Since this action is frequently taken by many, it holds a unique perspective. Therefore, there’s no intention to deviate from the current path.

We also spoke about the new FC IQ tactics system, and a whole lot more! Remember that you can see the full video at the top of this page, or on the TopMob Gaming YouTube channel.

The FC 25 game is scheduled to release on the 27th of September, 2024. However, players can get an early peek starting from the 20th of September. It will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
