Warning: Some SPOILERS lie ahead for Fear Street: Prom Queen!
In the Fear Street: Prom Queen, a gloomy shadow is falling over an exceptional period in Shadyside’s history. This film, being the fourth addition to Netflix’s horror series and adapting R.L. Stine’s 1992 novel with the same name, takes place in 1988, right between the first two movies of the series. The main focus of Prom Queen is on Lori and Megan, two ostracized friends at Shadyside High School who are making their way through their final year and planning for the upcoming prom, where Lori aims to win the title role. However, this attention on Lori makes her a potential victim of a murderer focusing on Prom Queen candidates, including her rival Tiffany.
In the movie “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” it isn’t just Lori and Megan who are pursued by the killer; members of Tiffany’s group, the Wolfpack, also become victims. This gang consists of Ella Rubin as Melissa (Tiffany’s right-hand woman), Rebecca Ablack as Debbie (often referred to as Tiffany’s spokesperson), Ilan O’Driscoll as Linda, and several others. Besides them, potential suspects and additional targets include David Iacono as Tyler, who Lori has a crush on because he’s Tiffany’s boyfriend, and Ariana Greenblatt as Christy, an unruly teen who becomes the crowd favorite for Prom Queen.
Looking forward to the premiere of Fear Street: Prom Queen, ScreenRant spoke with Suzanna Son, David Iacono, Ariana Greenblatt, Ella Rubin, and Rebecca Ablack. The pairing of Son and Iacono talked about working alongside India Fowler as Lori, sharing their insights on their interactions with her. Iacono also disclosed that his character’s destiny in the movie almost took a different turn. Meanwhile, Rubin expressed her joy over her current horror roles, including Until Dawn. Greenblatt and Ablack offered some insights into their characters as well.
Debbie & Christy Showcase The Attempt At Change In Shadyside
Rubin Also Calls It “Such An Honor” To Have Been Embraced By The Horror Community
As a film enthusiast, I’ve been fortunate to embark on this cinematic journey since my debut in 2014 with “The Rewrite.” The ensuing years have brought me some truly remarkable opportunities, such as appearing alongside Anne Hathaway in “The Idea of You” and gracing the screens of Netflix’s “The Chair.” This year, however, has been particularly thrilling. I’ve ventured into the chilling realm of horror with the adaptation of “Until Dawn” and “Fear Street: Prom Queen.” These projects have been nothing short of an honor for me to be a part of.
Rubin gleamed with enthusiasm. “To be honest, I have deep respect for the genre of horror, and the talent it brings forth,” he expressed. “Though I’ve always been a bit timid when it comes to horror, I must admit that it offers an incredible platform for some of my favorite actresses to shine. So, being involved in horror work is truly a privilege. Moreover, the growing acceptance of this genre is not only relieving but also incredibly exhilarating and enjoyable.
Besides emphasizing the significance of it, Rubin highlighted that a primary aim for films in this genre is to encourage people to watch together and share an intense emotional experience. She referred to this aspiration as her “dream as an actress” to be part of movies that foster such communal viewing. Expressing her gratitude and excitement, she added that she’s felt incredibly fortunate and eager to continue working in the horror genre, given its dedicated fanbase. In her opinion, devoting oneself to a genre is a beautiful testament to fervor and dedication.
In the film, Greenblatt and Ablack make their first foray into horror, with Greenblatt portraying the defiant character Christy. According to the Barbie alum, Christy is someone who has “come to terms” with living in Shadyside, standing out when compared to the other girls in the movie. Greenblatt expresses her affection for the role because Christy is “very down-to-earth.” Unlike the others who are eager to embrace the promising future of Shadyside, Christy is not overly optimistic; instead, she concentrates on fulfilling her responsibilities.
Greenblatt noted that she doesn’t seem to worry about what others think of her or her status, which makes her a fascinating, spontaneous character. Put simply, she doesn’t let judgment bother her, and she’s unpredictable, making her intriguing to watch. She does as she pleases and says goodbye to any unnecessary complications, with an attitude of ‘This life is pointless, this school is pointless, I just do what I can.’
Debbie, known as Tiffany’s closest friend, often plots strategies to dethrone Fina Strazza’s character, even though she is the Wolfpack’s spokesperson. Ablack clarifies that “Debbie is indeed competing for that position,” but adds that her character secretly aims to replace Melissa. She explains that Debbie is cunning enough to seize the spot if she could, but also acknowledges that she understands her role in the group.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but feel a sense of rivalry brewing between myself and Melissa. It seems we’re both aiming for the coveted No. 2 spot, and her ambition is making me quite irate. The competitive spirit in this situation is exhilarating, and Debbie, much like a cunning wolf, embodies that intensity perfectly. Her ruthless, almost malevolent nature, portrayed so vividly, makes for an exciting character to bring to life on screen.
Son & Iacono Found It “Effortless” To Connect With India Fowler
Son Also Loves The Comparisons To Deena & Sam From The Original Trilogy
Apart from scenes focusing on Tiffany and the heroine in Fear Street: Prom Queen, there is ample time dedicated to Lori’s bond with Megan, portrayed by Suzanna Son. Reflecting on their relationship development with Fowler, Son mentioned it felt “so natural” for both actors, as they instantly connected during filming, becoming quick friends. There were no moments of silence or discomfort, Son reminisced. In fact, she had to restrain herself sometimes because she thought, “Wait, Megan is still a bit reserved.
In his discussion, it was revealed that one key aspect in shaping Megan’s character was by connecting her strongly to Lori. He likened their relationship to a love letter and a cigarette, suggesting they complement each other like two items that naturally belong together. This dynamic is significant as it influences Megan’s transformation throughout the film, as she begins to appreciate the good in Shadyside and expresses her loyalty towards Lori as something “beautiful.
The original Fear Street trilogy primarily explored the dynamic between characters Deena and Sam. It’s interesting to note some similarities that might be found in Lori and Megan, but co-writer/director Matt Palmer and his cast members have clarified that these parallels were not intentionally planned. Instead, they aimed to create a distinct, independent story and left room for future developments in the series, allowing Matt Palmer to guide its direction and evolution as he saw fit.
In Lori’s storyline, David Iacono’s character Tyler, a sports star from Shadyside, initially dates Tiffany and harbors feelings for Lori. However, things take a turn when he splits with Tiffany and shares a kiss with Lori at the prom. The film further explores significant discussions between the two characters about their future plans and the town of Shadyside itself. These intense dialogues necessitated in-depth conversations among Iacono, Fowler, and Strazza, which Iacono referred to as being “extremely rewarding for an actor”.
Iacono explained, “I believe that both India and Fina provided me with all the essential elements for embarking on this journey with Tyler. Particularly noteworthy is a scene where Tiffany and Tyler address, in a swift and subtle manner, long-standing issues within their relationship. Consequently, I feel that the script effectively conveyed this, and it was truly rewarding to have India and Fina contribute in such a profound way.
The Killer’s Suit Was So Cool, The Stars “Wanted To Try It On”
Iacono’s Confrontation With The Killer Nearly Ended Very Differently
As the prom night begins, several characters from Fear Street: Prom Queen find themselves face-to-face with the murderer, and unfortunately for some, their encounters prove fatal. Pondering back on this chilling encounter, both Son and Iacono found the killer’s costume to be quite stylish. Son even admitted he wished he could have worn it himself, describing it as “trendy.” Iacono, in awe of the stuntman who played the murderer, shared that he came from a family of stunt performers and his parents were also stuntpeople. He went on to say, “That guy deserves a movie about him; he was so cool. He was incredibly skilled at his job, he was exceptional.
One of the victims in the murderer’s spree was Tyler Iacono’s character from the series, who escorted Lori to the school auditorium and attempted to get close to her. However, when she rejected his advances, the killer stepped out from behind them, stabbing him fatally with a machete. Interestingly, during an interview about filming his death scene, Iacono shared that in the original script for the movie, Tyler didn’t perish. The storyline evolved as the writers progressed, culminating in Tyler’s demise, which Iacono felt was a more fitting end for the character.
Towards the climax, in the scene featuring him and Lori on stage in the auditorium, a chilling aspect of his character previously suggested throughout the film emerges starkly. This dark facet ultimately manifests, leading to his tragic demise by stabbing. The ending felt both fitting and symbolic, providing closure while also leaving an unsettling impression due to its graphic nature.
