Fedora 42 on WSL: Test it out today and help shape the future

Recently, the Fedora Project unveiled their intentions to launch an official distribution image for the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), timed with the upcoming major release, Fedora 32. The release date is approaching quickly.

Now, the eagerness of beavers is encouraged as they are given an opportunity to try out the new development before its release. The designated Fedora test day for its WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) image falls on February 17th. Anyone interested can participate by downloading the image directly from Fedora, installing it, and experimenting with it at their leisure.

Before its official launch, you’ll have to set up the software yourself, which isn’t overly complicated. Rest assured, the Fedora team is always ready to help during regular hours, offering guidance and addressing queries via their Matrix chat platform.

To get the Fedora 42 pre-release version, visit the test day page, find and download the required tarball. There are versions for x86_64 and arm64 architectures. This means you can join in even if you’re using a modern Snapdragon X-powered Copilot+ PC.

After obtaining the file, launch your preferred terminal (which could be Windows Terminal), then type in this PowerShell command:

OR

Once the file is at hand, fire up your chosen terminal (preferably Windows Terminal) and input this PowerShell instruction:

wsl --install --from-file

Instead, let me break it down more casually: If you want an easier approach, right-click on the folder where you saved it, choose “Open in Terminal,” and then type the command along with the filename without needing the complete file path.

Sure, you’re not required to give feedback, but since it’s a test day, it would be very beneficial. This is particularly important because this is the first time Fedora is doing it, and your help can significantly contribute to making the final release exceptional.

After the testing period ends, the outcomes will be disclosed, and operations will continue as usual. It’s anticipated that Fedora 42’s desktop version due in April may also see a finalized WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) release around the same timeframe. However, in the meantime, feel free to download it, experiment with it, and share your feedback.
