Over the past decade and numerous expansions, Final Fantasy 14 has amassed a vast roster of characters whom you encounter during your adventure as the Warrior of Light. Although some characters have perished over time, it’s become less frequent with each expansion. Instead, what seems to occur more frequently are “fake deaths,” where the character is discovered to be alive or reappears miraculously. As a result, it has become challenging to feel genuine emotional investment in a character’s demise since one tends to doubt they will truly pass away or suspect their death is only temporary and the storyline will ultimately resurrect them.

In comparison to previous expansions, Dawntrail tends to have a more light-hearted approach and fewer character deaths. It’s reasonable to expect such an absence given the tone shift, but some deaths do occur, primarily affecting minor characters with limited screen time who often remain deceased if they meet their end during the Main Story Quest. However, it appears that Final Fantasy XIV is becoming more hesitant about killing off and keeping characters permanently dead.
7.1 Continues the Trend of Fake-Out Deaths in FFXIV
In the world of Final Fantasy XIV, it’s not uncommon for a character to appear deceased only to reappear later, a narrative device often employed but overused in this game. While it’s acceptable to use this trope sparingly, the issue lies in its excessive usage in FFXIV. Although Dawntrail has some deaths that have left lasting impacts, the 7.1 update diminished the emotional weight of character deaths from 7.0 by resurrecting characters we thought were no longer alive.
As a devoted fan, I’ve found myself growing numb to character deaths or implied deaths in some stories, often expecting their eventual resurrection. This habit strips the emotional weight from such events, unlike the poignant and impactful death in Final Fantasy 7’s narrative. In contrast, the deaths in Final Fantasy 16 carry a significant impact because they are unpredictable, making each loss feel genuine and heart-wrenching.
FFXIV Doesn’t Want to Fully Eliminate Characters
In simpler terms, it seems that Final Fantasy XIV is finding itself in a predicament where it’s worried about losing certain characters, only to discover their potential usefulness later on. While this fear is reasonable, the solution isn’t creating false death scenarios. Even when a character does die, the impact isn’t as powerful due to the frequent occurrence of these fake deaths. This desensitization to character deaths can be challenging to overcome. However, reversing the effects of years of such deceitful deaths will take significant effort on the part of Final Fantasy XIV to ensure that future deaths have the desired emotional impact again.
