Fifth Element Star Teases Leeloo Returning in Animated Spinoff (And It Sounds Awesome)

Actress Milla Jovovich hinted at potentially reprising her role as Leeloo in an animated spinoff of “The Fifth Element.” She shared this during an interview with ComicBook, promoting her upcoming movie “In the Lost Lands,” set to release in U.S. theaters on March 7th. During the conversation, she also mentioned the possibility of collaborating with director Luc Besson again, suggesting that he might already be brainstorming a spinoff involving several of his iconic characters. This is the first we’ve heard about such a project, but it has certainly piqued fans’ interest. Jovovich appears eager to revisit one of her early roles that solidified her fame in the industry.

Milla Jovovich hinted that Luc Besson might be creating a spinoff featuring some of his most prominent characters, potentially including Leeloo. She mentioned this would be an animated version. In the past, they didn’t consider sequels; instead, their focus was on making the best movie possible. For Jovovich, Leeloo was a significant character from her youth that taught her what it meant to truly act as an actor.

1997 saw the debut of “The Fifth Element,” a film that brought significant acclaim for Luc Besson, Milla Jovovich, and their co-stars like Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Ian Holm, and Chris Tucker. This movie, with its sci-fi plotline, was an adaptation of the comics and novels that inspired Besson during his childhood. In this story, Milla Jovovich portrayed Leeloo, a character born from the genetic material of an alien species.

It’s uncertain if a spin-off of “The Fifth Element” will materialize, but for now, Milla Jovovich is engrossed in her project titled “In the Lost Lands.” The movie’s summary goes as follows: “Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and inspired by George R.R. Martin’s short story, a queen orders the formidable Gray Alys (Milla Jovovich), a sorceress feared by many, to venture into the haunting wilderness of the Lost Lands in pursuit of supernatural power. In this treacherous realm, Gray Alys and her guide, the wanderer Boyce (Dave Bautista), will need to outsmart both humans and demons.

Martin is primarily recognized for his epic fantasy series titled “A Song of Ice and Fire,” which served as the foundation for HBO’s acclaimed show “Game of Thrones.” Prior to this, many of his narratives were set within the science fiction universe called “The Thousand Worlds.” However, “In the Lost Lands” is one of the rare standalone stories he penned. In a humble blog post when the film adaptation was announced, Martin disclosed that he had initially planned to create a series of tales centered around Gray Alys as an introduction for a more extensive series.

If you’re intrigued, “In the Lost Lands” can be found in Martin’s compilation book titled “Dreamsongs“. This book is accessible in print, digital, and audiobook versions. The movie version will premiere in U.S. theaters on March 7th. Meanwhile, you can stream “The Fifth Element” on Peacock right now.
