Figment the Dragon Gets Dropped for Disney+ Show!

It appears that Figment the Dragon is moving closer to having his own series on Disney+. Among all the characters in Disney’s extensive catalog, Figment seems to be the only one who hasn’t received significant attention, either through feature films or television shows. Characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck are seen everywhere on Disney merchandise, but it’s hard to find products featuring Figment. These are questions that Disney CEO Bob Iger has been asked repeatedly, leading him to contemplate the possibility of launching a future project about Figment the Dragon on Disney+.

During its annual shareholder gathering today, Disney CEO Bob Iger was queried about the possibility of Figment the Dragon receiving his own series or film. In response, Iger remarked that this question has been posed to him approximately 15 times throughout his 24-year tenure and 18 years as CEO. He acknowledged the character’s popularity among shareholders due to their frequent inquiries about him, as well as his appeal at EPCOT where visitors can interact with him and explore imagination. Iger hinted that he would ask Disney’s creative teams to think about developing a series or short-form videos featuring Figment because of the character’s widespread popularity beyond just being a walk-around character in their parks and resorts.

Disney CEO announces plans for Figment the Dragon Disney+ project

Originating from the minds of Tony Baxter and Steve Kirk, Figment the Little Purple Dragon is a character showcased at Disney’s Epcot theme park. As his name indicates, Figment boasts an active imagination that shines brightly in the Journey into Imagination with Figment ride located within Epcot’s Imagination! pavilion. Back in the ’80s, a few short films featuring Figment were produced, but since then, he has mostly been confined to theme parks. However, thanks to his immense popularity, as confirmed by Iger, Figment is set to make a comeback in new ways beyond the park attractions.

2022 saw a report emerge indicating that Disney was working on a feature film featuring Figment the Dragon, with Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit (from Detective Pikachu) penning the script and Seth Rogen’s Point Grey Productions involved. Since then, no further updates have been made public, leaving us uncertain about the movie’s current status. Given this, one might assume that Bob Iger would be aware of a Figment film and could have addressed it during the shareholder meeting when asked about it.

It has been revealed that Disney and Pixar are indeed planning a sequel to “Coco,” with the film set for release in the year 2029. This means that if all goes according to plan, the sequel will arrive 12 years after the original movie garnered an impressive $814 million during the Thanksgiving holiday season back in 2017.

During a recent shareholder call, Iger expressed that the movie is still in its early development stages, but he’s confident it will be filled with laughter, emotion, and excitement. He’s eager to reveal more details soon. Meanwhile, Pixar has revealed the title for the upcoming film “Coco 2” which sees the original creative team returning, including Academy Award-winning director Lee Unkrich (Coco, Toy Story 3) and co-director Adrian Molina. Additionally, Oscar winner Mark Nielsen (Toy Story 4, Inside Out 2) will serve as the film’s producer.
