The movie “Final Destination: Bloodlines” reintroduces one of the most popular horror series to the big screen after over a decade, delivering the gruesome deaths that made the series legendary. Directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein have done their homework well, as “Final Destination: Bloodlines” has been receiving outstanding reviews and is expected to be a box office success. Interestingly, this new film delves deeper into the mythology than any previous installments, examining Death’s design in detail. Most significantly, the end credits sequence of “Final Destination: Bloodlines” cleverly connects the entire franchise by altering our understanding of Death’s past victims.
Warning: Spoilers below for Final Destination Bloodlines
The movie “Final Destination: Bloodlines” starts in 1968 with what is arguably the most captivating premonition scene across the entire series. In this opening, we accompany Iris (played by Brec Bassinger) as she’s escorted by her boyfriend, Paul (Max Lloyd-Jones), to the grand opening of a luxurious restaurant perched atop a tower. Regrettably, events take an unfortunate turn and the tower transforms into a lethal trap, claiming the lives of hundreds. Fortunately, Iris’ foresight enables the patrons and workers of the Sky Tower to survive, making it more challenging for Death to locate numerous individuals.
Due to the high survival rate following the Sky Tower incident and Death’s compulsive nature, it takes years to set up all the intricate accidents we cherish. This extended timeframe allowed some survivors to have children or even grandchildren, which were not part of Death’s original plan. These newly created individuals are added to Death’s roster, leading to a systematic process that eliminates each family lineage in sequence, from the oldest to the youngest. This unexpected plot twist within the franchise’s structure provides an explanation for why every subsequent movie unfolded as it did.
How Final Destination Bloodlines Explains the Plot of the Entire Franchise
As a movie enthusiast, I’m captivated by “The Sky Tower” where the story unfolds in two distinct timelines. While the psychic visions of the protagonist, Iris, are nestled in the swinging ’60s, the main narrative unravels in the present day. My granddaughter Stefani (Kaitlyn Santa Juana) finds herself haunted by terrifying nightmares about the Sky Tower disaster. As she delves deeper into the mystery, she discovers her long-lost grandmother, Iris, is miraculously alive and residing secluded in a forest cabin to evade Death’s relentless pursuit. Over the years, Iris has amassed an extensive journal, documenting the deaths of each Sky Tower survivor and their descendants, meticulously tracing the sequence of Death’s chilling designs.
In the movie “Final Destination: Bloodlines”, Iris’ book plays a significant role as Stefani attempts to employ it to safeguard her family after the matriarch eventually passes away. However, throughout the film, only a few pages with doodles and jottings are shown. It isn’t until the end credits that we get a closer look at Iris’ creation – a collage of Death’s victims over time, artfully arranged using red tape as a guide for followers through the sequence of events. To our astonishment, the newspaper clippings Iris compiled in her book detail the grisly demises seen in previous “Final Destination” films.
The final scene of “Final Destination: Bloodlines” suggests a chilling revelation: The disastrous incidents from prior films were orchestrated by Death to eliminate the descendants who were destined to die in the Sky Tower accident. This implies that most major characters who fell victim to Death’s plan throughout the series had ancestors who lived longer than expected, thanks to Iris’ initial premonition. This insight offers a reason behind why the survivors’ persistent efforts to evade Death consistently falter, as they were marked for death due to an event that transpired many years ago.
In the end credits, there are hints that link together the main characters from the Final Destination series, each of them having premonitions, suggesting a mysterious power working since 1968 to thwart disastrous events. The origin of these premonitions remains unclear, but it’s now certain that they all stem from the Sky Tower accident, which set off this chain of events.
Final Destination Bloodlines is currently available in theaters.
