  • Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, two large Square Enix games, both launched as PlayStation 5 exclusives.

As a lifelong fan who has witnessed the rise and fall of many beloved franchises, it’s always a bittersweet moment when a cherished series like Final Fantasy stumbles. The news that both Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth didn’t meet Square Enix’s expectations is disappointing, to say the least.

Some of the biggest games of the last two years haven’t met expectations.

Publisher Square Enix confirmed in a May 2024 financial results briefing (that is now available publicly) that after launching big games including Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth “profits unfortunately did not meet our expectations.”

As an analyst, I’d rephrase it like this: I had the pleasure of experiencing two extraordinary titles, Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which graced our gaming platforms respectively on June 22, 2023, and Feb. 29, 2024. Initially, these games were exclusive to PlayStation 5. More recently, Final Fantasy 16 expanded its reach to Windows PC users via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth didn't meet expectations for Square Enix

In its inaugural week, Final Fantasy 16 managed to sell an impressive three million units. As for Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Square Enix hasn’t disclosed sales figures yet, but according to analysts at Circana, it currently ranks as the ninth highest-selling game of the year in the U.S.

Previously only available on PlayStation 4 in 2020, the precursor to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, titled Final Fantasy 7 Remake, made its debut. In June 2021, an upgraded version for PlayStation 5 was unveiled, complete with additional DLC. A PC version became available in December of that year. By September 2023, the game had sold over 7 million copies worldwide.

Square Enix has disclosed its intention to unveil a greater number of multi-platform games rather than solely focusing on console exclusivity in the future. In a recent statement, Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki Yoshida expressed that Square Enix aims to make more games accessible on Xbox, implying that “Starting with Final Fantasy 14, we intend to publish additional Square Enix games on Xbox, and you can expect to see even more of our titles launch on this platform. So I’m excited about the prospect of future releases on Xbox.

As an analyst, I’m excited to share some upcoming releases from Square Enix. Apart from the much-anticipated launch of Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox in 2024, they surprise-released Octopath Traveler 2 on Xbox earlier this year. Peeking into the future, we can expect the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake to drop in November 2024, with remakes of Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest 2 set to follow suit in 2025.
