Can Final Fantasy XVI run on gaming handhelds?

Final Fantasy 16 PC system requirements - can your system handle the grand spectacle of the latest Final Fantasy title?

Some gamers enjoy playing their favorite PC games on-the-go using portable devices such as Valve’s Steam Deck rather than at home. Although these handheld gaming systems may not offer the same level of hardware power as dedicated PC rigs, they allow players to experience top-tier PC titles while traveling.

Moreover, owning a portable gaming device could serve as an excellent complement to your PC setup since Steam allows you to move your game saves using the Steam Cloud feature. This comes in handy when playing lengthy titles such as Final Fantasy, ensuring you can pick up right where you left off across devices.

On the other hand, gaming handheld devices come with pre-set hardware specifications that cannot be altered or enhanced (apart from expanding storage capacity). This makes it challenging to ascertain whether certain PC games are compatible with gaming handheld devices.

Here’s what we know about Final Fantasy XVI’s compatibility on gaming handheld as of this writing.

Will Final Fantasy XVI run on Steam Deck?

Players, including me, have successfully tested running Final Fantasy XVI on the Steam Deck following its demo release. Yet, it’s worth noting that the game’s resolution and frame rate could use some improvement on the Steam Deck, as observed during the demo playthrough.

During high-action parts of the game, the frame rate often drops below 30 per second, leading to a significant issue known as aliasing which is visible throughout the screen. Even at the game’s minimum graphical settings and when using additional power from a charger (like on the Steam Deck), these graphical flaws persist.

One simple rephrased version could be: It’s fantastic news that the game functions flawlessly in terms of controls on Steam Deck, with minimal or no input lag at all. This is crucial for Final Fantasy XVI, given that it’s an action role-playing game primarily focused on combat.

If you’re okay with lowering graphics quality and frame rates, it appears that Final Fantasy XVI can be played on the Steam Deck. However, please note that this is based on my experience with the PC demo. It’s possible that when the full version of the game is released, Final Fantasy XVI might receive post-launch optimization updates to run more smoothly on Steam Deck.

Will Final Fantasy XVI run on ASUS ROG Ally?

If the PC demo of Final Fantasy XVI can run on the Steam Deck, then it’s quite likely that the ASUS ROG Ally will be able to handle the game as well. In fact, given that the ASUS ROG Ally boasts more powerful hardware than the Steam Deck, it might even run Final Fantasy XVI at higher resolutions and frame rates.

You can reserve your copy of Final Fantasy 16 for purchase now on Steam and the Epic Games Store, as it’s set to release on September 17, 2024. If you’d like a sneak peek, there’s also a free demo available to try out beforehand.
