Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 “Twist” Teased by Square Enix

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I have witnessed the evolution of Final Fantasy from its humble beginnings to the epic masterpieces it has become today. The anticipation for the third installment of the remake, set to release in 2028, is palpable. However, the prospect of it potentially being a PS6 game or a cross-gen release between PS5 and PS6 adds an intriguing layer to the wait.

The third installment of Final Fantasy 7 Remake is currently being developed, following the releases of the original in 2020 and the Rebirth in 2024. Given its timeline, it may very well be released as a PlayStation 6 game or at least a cross-generational release between PS5 and PS6, although it’s still quite a few years away. Square Enix has been discussing it openly, even hinting at an exciting “twist” that fans can expect in the third game.

Naoki Hamaguchi, the director, intentionally strives to steer clear of a common issue found in numerous open-world games: creating an expansive world that, despite variations among regions, employs identical mechanics with little or no fresh experiences as one travels from one region to another. According to him, many open-world games fail to deliver novelty when moving from one region to another.

Hamaguchi stated, “It’s clear that the battle system in Rebirth is fantastic, offering loads of enjoyment from fighting diverse monsters across each region. However, we aimed to make each new region feel like a refreshing change. We wanted you to feel excited about doing something fresh when entering a new area, experiencing unique mechanics. To achieve this, we included numerous mini-games, and I believe we successfully accomplished our goal in creating that sense of novelty. In essence, it’s a breath of fresh air in our open world or ‘open field,’ as we refer to it for Rebirth.

Hamaguchi hinted at introducing a fresh element in the upcoming third installment: “Will we keep this balance moving forward? Have we already achieved perfection? If we simply repeated the formula for the next game in the series, it wouldn’t offer much novelty or excitement anymore,” he commented. “I aim to introduce a new twist, shuffle things around a bit, and give the next game a unique feel. We don’t want to create more of the same; we want to provide fresh and captivating experiences.

It appears that Hamaguchi doesn’t explicitly explain what this “unique perspective” entails, yet it’s clear that they, along with their team, have a specific idea for the game.
