In an interview, the producer of the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth sequel, Yoshinori Kitase, has confirmed that the upcoming game will not be exclusive to Sony’s next PlayStation console. He simply stated, “Rest easy about the next one.
The answer arrived following a query concerning if the third installment of this trilogy will continue in line with its predecessors’ console exclusivity patterns. Given that Final Fantasy 7 Remake was initially available only on PS4, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was exclusively for PS5 at launch, such a trend could lead some to speculate that the third game might be exclusive to PS6.
In this context, Kitase’s statement might imply that he estimates a substantial amount of time will be required to complete the development of the third game. During the same interview, he mentioned that work on the third installment had begun immediately following the PS5 launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth last year, which means they have been working on it for approximately nine months so far.
Square Enix has shared that they aim to distribute their future games across multiple platforms. Despite this, they expressed satisfaction with the sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. However, Tetsuya Nomura stated back in December that he feels it’s unlikely for a game to be exclusive to one platform given the increasing development costs.
Coincidentally, Square Enix revealed that the sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth were lower than anticipated during its initial release period. They stated that the sales “did not meet the expected level.
In September, Square Enix showed a keen inclination towards releasing games on multiple platforms due to escalating production expenses and underperforming sales of their exclusive titles like Final Fantasy 16 at that point in time.
During a separate conversation with Famicom, Kitase shared that the narrative for the third installment has already been finished, and its development is proceeding smoothly without any setbacks. He expressed great contentment with the storyline that will conclude the trilogy.
