Occasionally, it’s tough to carve out a distinct identity when standing alongside iconic characters like Cloud Strife in the same universe of Final Fantasy. However, Final Fantasy IX has managed to create its own niche with its distinctive character designs and gripping narrative. While Cloud and his fellow combatants from Final Fantasy VII have been given a remake series, the tale centered around Zidane, Garnet, and their eccentric group of adventurers is yet to receive the same treatment. Unfortunately, there’s been a setback in the potential release of an animated series for Final Fantasy IX as the animation studio initially assigned to work on the show has closed down.
According to the Paris Commercial Court’s decision, the company was closed due to financial difficulties following recent obstacles, necessitating liquidation to settle outstanding debts. Although the company has yet to issue an official statement, Christine Blerot, SVP of marketing and licensing at Cyber Group, expressed her surprise on LinkedIn about the sudden liquidation. Despite a potential buyer, Solent, having contacted the court with a specific offer since December 24th, supported by the CEO and employees of CGS, it seems that this offer was not given due consideration. Blerot found this situation puzzling, especially considering the complex nature of financing in animation, which is unlike any other economic sector except video games. She expressed hope that the team would find new opportunities soon.
What Was The Final Fantasy IX Series Going To Be About?
The animated series will significantly deviate from just retelling the story of Zidane and his allies, as it was intended to focus on the children of Vivi, the Black Mage, a decade after the game’s end. Back in 2021, Pierre Sissmann, then Chairman of Cyber Group Studio, expressed excitement about collaborating with Square Enix on this venture, stating: “We are honored and eager to embark on such a grand adventure. The prospect of reaching such a vast audience with hundreds of millions of fans globally, as well as a new generation of both kids and adults, presents a formidable challenge that we feel incredibly proud to undertake. It is a dream come true for our teams in France and the U.S., and we eagerly anticipate creating an outstanding piece of entertainment that honors this iconic brand.
Prior to the current shutdown, it was Cyber Group Studios that declared bankruptcy last year, casting doubt over the future of the “Final Fantasy” series. Scattered pieces of concept art have surfaced online, offering fans a glimpse into what appears to be an abandoned franchise, although no official updates have been shared yet.
