Final Fantasy IX fans think this new website hints at the long rumored remake

This year on July 7, 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX, a highly cherished installment in the Final Fantasy series and the last major title from the franchise that was launched for the PlayStation One console.

On this special day, Square Enix is unveiling a fresh website dedicated to the Final Fantasy IX anniversary, offering an array of exclusive goods for the game such as stuffed toys, action figures, songs, books, and additional items.

Meanwhile, Reddit users are theorizing that the site might be subtly suggesting a potential announcement of the long-anticipated remake of Final Fantasy IX to commemorate its 25th anniversary.

Another factor contributing to this theory is that, as stated by VGA, a data leak from GeForce NOW in 2021 hinted at a possible remake of Final Fantasy IX. It turns out that some games on this list eventually came true, like the Chrono Cross Remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the PC version of the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Sure, it’s important to remember that since Square Enix hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet, speculation about a remake of Final Fantasy IX should be treated with caution.

Nevertheless, we might speculate about how a remake could turn out, as revealed in an IGN interview with Final Fantasy XIV’s head, Naoki Yoshida. When asked about the possibility of a Final Fantasy IX remake, he gave his response.

Indeed, there are calls for the remake of Final Fantasy IX, but when you consider its extensive content, I can’t help but ponder if it could realistically be remade as a standalone title. It’s quite challenging to imagine such a task, I must admit.

Certainly, people have asked for Final Fantasy IX to be remade, but when you take into account the game’s massive scope, it makes me question if it could be remade as a single project. It’s undeniably difficult to envision such an undertaking, I must confess.

It appears that if Square Enix decides to remake Final Fantasy IX, they might choose to divide the game into several parts, akin to how they’ve approached the Final Fantasy VII Remake as a trilogy.

Will Final Fantasy IX receive the Final Fantasy VII Remake treatment?

Among the countless video games I’ve played throughout my life, none have left as lasting an impression as Final Fantasy IX. Its captivating narrative, intriguing characters, timeless art style, immersive world exploration, and enthralling turn-based battle system transformed me into a die-hard JRPG enthusiast, with my affection for Final Fantasy VII only growing stronger as a result.

Should Square Enix decide to remake Final Fantasy IX, I’m hoping they preserve its classic turn-based combat system. To be honest, I find that style more enjoyable compared to the real-time combat systems in recent Final Fantasy titles like Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Additionally, I’m crossing my fingers that the Final Fantasy IX remake will also be available on Xbox consoles and PC platforms. This would allow me to enjoy it alongside other fantastic JRPG revivals such as the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, Live A Live Remake, and the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.

Indeed, we can only wait and see if the whispers about Square Enix revisiting the enchanting realm of Final Fantasy IX for a modern overhaul actually come to fruition.
