The Sony State of Play event in June 2025 brought joy to long-term fans of Final Fantasy, as Square Enix declared that the iconic strategy role-playing game from the PlayStation One era, Final Fantasy Tactics, is being revamped for contemporary systems under the title Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles.

The game is set to debut across various platforms including Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, an upcoming Nintendo Switch model, and PC via Steam on September 30, 2025. Pre-orders can already be made through the digital stores for each platform.

This PlayStation One classic gets to shine once more and remind us of Final Fantasy’s ‘Golden Age’

If you haven’t heard, Final Fantasy Tactics is a spin-off from Square Enix’s famous Final Fantasy series that came out in 1997 on the PlayStation One. The game revolves around Ramza Beoulve, a noble who finds himself caught up in a brutal war between two powerful factions vying for control over the kingdom of Ivalice.

Instead of the typical turn-based combat found in other Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy Tactics featured a strategic turn-based gameplay system. In this version, you strategically placed your party members on a grid before attacking enemies or casting spells from afar.

Final Fantasy Tactics was highly praised within the Final Fantasy series for its groundbreaking strategic mechanics and its rich narrative that revolves around politics, heartbreak, and conflict.

Indeed, Final Fantasy Tactics proved incredibly popular, leading to the creation of its own franchise and providing the backdrop for Final Fantasy 12.

Starting September 30, 2025, both newcomers and long-time enthusiasts of Final Fantasy can once again experience the greatness of this classic game as it will be available on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms.
