First Look at A Friend of Dorothy starring Stephen Fry and Miriam Margolyes

At the Raindance Film Festival in London this coming June, the highly anticipated short film “A Friend of Dorothy” will make its debut. This film features renowned actors such as Dame Miriam Margolyes OBE and Sir Stephen Fry. We now have a sneak peek at these talented individuals performing.

Alongside glimpses of the duo portraying Dickie (Fry) and Dorothy (Margolyes in their new short film, we’ve got an initial peek at Alistair Nwachukwu as JJ and Oscar Lloyd playing the role of Scott.

The tranquil existence of a widowed woman is disrupted when a young soccer player unintentionally sends the ball into her yard.

According to the movie’s plotline: “The story unfolds around Dorothy (Margolyes), a senior citizen residing alone, who forms an unanticipated bond with her young neighbor, JJ (Nwachukwu). This bond starts when his football accidentally lands in her backyard.

This movie delves into topics related to the LGBTQ+ community, feelings of loneliness in old age, and intergenerational camaraderie. Notably, it receives backing from AgeUK, a charitable organization, as the filmmakers plan to showcase the film at retirement homes and educational institutions nationwide, in addition to its festival screenings.

The movie signifies the first time that actor Lee Knight takes on both directing and writing roles (and functions as an executive producer as well). Previously, Knight has acted in productions such as Hamlet, The Trial of Christine Keeler, and most recently, The Stolen Girl.

Indeed, Margolyes has made a name for herself with numerous roles across diverse productions, such as the Harry Potter movie series, Call the Midwife, The Age of Innocence, among others. Lately, she has appeared in Dead Ringers, Doctor Who, Hilda, and Mog’s Christmas.

Regarding Fry, he’s currently appearing on our screens, hosting Jeopardy! and featuring in shows such as The Morning Show, The Sandman, and Everything Now.

Most people are familiar with Nwachukwu due to his portrayal of Adrik in Shadow and Bone, whereas Lloyd gained popularity through his appearances in Emmerdale, Hotel Portofino, and the 4 O’Clock Club.

In these pictures, there’s a mix of different expressions and situations depicted. Dorothy is seen beaming while seated on a chair, while Scott appears to be engaged in a chat, sitting on the sofa as if with someone else. JJ is shown standing at the front door. Additionally, we can spot a smiling Dickie inside a house, dressed in a suit and bow tie.

I’m thrilled to share that the short film I’ve been part of will be premiering in just a few weeks! The grand unveiling takes place at the Raindance Film Festival, specifically on the 25th and 27th of June. Can’t wait for you all to see it!

A Friend of Dorothy is created by Knight’s Filthy Gorgeous Productions, in collaboration with A Marlow’s Production, Double Dice Films, and Namesake Films. James Dean (known for Apocalypse Clown and The Stolen Girl), Scottie Fotré, and Max Marlow are also involved in this production.

The crew responsible for the short film comprises cinematographer Vanessa Whyte BSC (known from Ted Lasso), the BAFTA award-winning production designer Amanda Bernstein (famous for Silo), and Francisco Rodriguez-Weil, a costume designer nominated by BAFTA Cymru in the past (notable for Madfabulous).
