In Season 3 of “The Wheel of Time“, we’ll venture to unusual locales, such as the legendary city of Tanchico. A fresh set of sneak peeks were unveiled on Wednesday featuring Mat (Dónal Finn), Nynaeve (Zoë Robins), and Min (Kae Alexander) casually exploring the city – all dressed in fitting attire. It’s uncertain if they are attempting to avoid attention, but intriguingly, the most effective way to fit in within Tanchico would be by looking as ostentatious as they do now. This location hasn’t been featured on the series before, but in the books, it is the capital of the nation of Tarabon and one of the oldest civilizations in existence. Here are our initial glimpses of Tanchico and what they may hint about the approaching season.
Season 3 of “The Wheel of Time” debuts on Amazon Prime Video this Thursday, March 13th. Although we anticipate that it will loosely follow the fifth and sixth books in the series, there are numerous unresolved questions regarding the story’s direction due to the TV adaptation making various alterations with far-reaching consequences for the plot. For instance, while characters do travel to Tanchico in the fourth book, their journey won’t unfold exactly as described in the novel.
It seems that the portrayal of the city is remarkably accurate. As you can observe, Tanchico is a vibrant urban center, famous for its bustling markets and extensive trade connections. Situated in Tanchico Bay, a strategic harbor, its infrastructure is adaptable to accommodate various situations. Moving further from the coastline, you’ll find some grand fortresses that grow increasingly magnificent, culminating at the Panarch’s Palace, which we haven’t glimpsed on-screen yet.
Mat appears to have adapted well in Tanchico on the surface, yet a hint of dissatisfaction seems to be masked by his disguise. It’s evident from his demeanor that he might not be entirely content with his situation, as shown below. The most distressed member of the Two Rivers group is impeccably attired, and it appears as though Min is sporting a self-satisfied grin behind him.
As a dedicated moviegoer, I can’t help but notice Nynaeve’s palpable unease, which she seems to be struggling to conceal. Anyone who dares to comment on her discomfort might find themselves in an uncomfortable situation. Season 2 saw some significant moments for Nynaeve, and while there are more substantial events on the horizon, it appears that other characters may need to share some of the spotlight with her. As the narrative unfolds, Nynaeve could reprise her role as an audience surrogate in Tanchico, learning crucial details that we, the viewers, will also get to hear.
Post the conclusion of Season 2, a significant part of the narrative will revolve around encountering various inhabitants of this realm and convincing them to acknowledge the Dragon Reborn and other prophecies. The alliances we form with these groups, be they political, military, or magical, could prove crucial in the battles ahead. However, it’s important to remember that their individual interests won’t be dismissed lightly. This series has paved the way for much of modern fantasy by thoughtfully exploring how world leaders might react to a supernatural threat and a potential savior.
In just a few days, on March 13th this coming Thursday, the third season of “The Wheel of Time” will debut on Amazon Prime Video. If you haven’t caught up yet, you can stream the previous seasons right now on their platform. The series is also available in various formats for reading, including print, digital, and audiobooks.
