As a longtime Marvel fan and video game enthusiast, I can wholeheartedly agree with ComicBook’s list of five Marvel games that deserve a comeback. Having grown up playing these iconic titles, it’s disheartening to see them languishing in obscurity while their emulated versions circulate among die-hard fans.
Video games based on Marvel characters can offer a varied experience, but they generally have a positive reputation. Despite some notorious flops such as X-Men: Destiny or the NES’s Silver Surfer, there have been numerous excellent titles released over the years. Unfortunately, many of these games were only available once, leaving modern gamers to hunt for emulators or expensive original copies. It’s surprising that some of these games haven’t been re-released. In light of this, ComicBook has put together a list of five Marvel games that urgently need ports and remasters for platforms like Steam, Switch, PS5, and Xbox.
5. The Incredible Hulk: Unbridled Devastation – After the financial success of a game tied to the Eric Bana Hulk movie, developer Radical Entertainment started working on a follow-up. Over time, this project morphed into a game inspired by Hulk comics, titled The Incredible Hulk: Unbridled Devastation. Launched in 2005, Unbridled Devastation allowed the green colossus to traverse an open world and wreak havoc. The game also boasted a narrative penned by Paul Jenkins, with Bryan Hitch involved in the game’s concept art and overall aesthetic design. The game showcased various looks for Hulk, including one modeled after Joe Fixit. In terms of Hulk games, this one was nearly flawless, and it’s high time that new players got to experience it.
4. X-Men (1992) – In 1992, no publisher was creating arcade brawlers quite like Konami. After the success of games like “Turtles in Time” and “The Simpsons”, Konami launched “X-Men”, an arcade game inspired by the “Pryde of the X-Men” animated pilot. Despite being released in the same year that a completely different group of X-Men was being introduced on TV, this didn’t seem to affect the game’s popularity. Over the years, “X-Men” has been re-released through popular Arcade1Up cabinets and has even inspired Marvel Legends toys based on the game’s Sentinels. Unfortunately, it hasn’t had a home release in over a decade and is currently unavailable on modern platforms. It truly deserves another release.
3. Marvel Ultimate Alliance – Following the success of two highly praised X-Men Legends games, developer Raven Software chose to broaden the scope of the series by incorporating the entire Marvel Universe. The outcome was Marvel Ultimate Alliance, an action role-playing game showcasing characters such as Spider-Man, X-Men, Avengers, and many others. Although some aspects from the Ultimate universe and 616 have become less relevant over time, Raven Software filled the game with a vast amount of fan service, offering multiple character skins among other features. The series received a robust new installment on Nintendo Switch by Koei Tecmo several years ago, but it would be wonderful to see the original version updated and made accessible across various platforms.
2. Thor: God of Thunder – When the initial Thor film hit cinemas in 2011, it was accompanied by video games on all contemporary gaming platforms. Most of these didn’t leave a lasting impression, but the DS version stood out as quite decent. This might be unexpected for those who haven’t played it, but Thor: God of Thunder was created by WayForward, the studio known for the Shantae series, The Mummy Demastered, and the recent Advance Wars remake. Thor: God of Thunder delivered players an engaging side-scroller that utilized the system’s dual screens effectively, with boss battles against massive enemies. Regrettably, this game has been largely overlooked by gamers, which is unfortunate because its sprites and character designs are exceptional and would shine even brighter in HD.
Originally released on PlayStation in 2000, the Activision game Spider-Man was groundbreaking for allowing players to web-sling in 3D. This marked the beginning of a more immersive Spider-Man gaming experience that eventually evolved into games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PlayStation 5. Although it may seem outdated compared to modern games, its impact remains significant. The game boasts an engaging storyline with impressive voice acting from actors such as Rino Romano (Spider-Man Unlimited) and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as Doctor Octopus (Spider-Man: The Animated Series). Additionally, Stan Lee served as the game’s narrator, and a catchy remix of the classic Spider-Man theme song was included.
As a diehard fan, I can’t help but feel excited about the success of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which prove that there’s a strong demand for remasters of iconic PlayStation games. It would truly be a dream come true to witness these treatments given to the Spider-Man series from the PS1 era. To be honest, even a simple port would bring immense joy!
