Flight Risk – REVIEW

In the latest thriller, instead of usual items like batteries or alarmed briefcases, it’s Winston (Topher Grace), a corrupt accountant on the run from the mob, who poses as the flight risk. He is captured in Alaska by Marshall Madolyn (Michelle Dockery). To transport him to a New York courtroom for testimony, she books a small plane and handcuffs Winston into it, with Daryl (Mark Wahlberg) at the helm as the pilot. However, it turns out that Daryl himself becomes the real flight risk when Madolyn discovers he’s actually a mob enforcer sent to ensure Winston doesn’t reach court. With the GPS malfunctioning and the radio seemingly broken, they all find themselves in a high-stakes game of deception as Madolyn struggles to determine who she can trust.

This story primarily focuses on three characters, set within a compact location, providing each actor an opportunity to step out of their usual roles: Dockery delves into an action-packed role as a marshal with a checkered past, Wahlberg takes on the antagonist for a change, and Grace brings humor in a script penned by debut writer Jared Rosenberg. Mel Gibson, who hasn’t starred in a film since ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ in 2016, directs this film that offers an escape from reality, distancing itself from his previous projects. With only six films in such a role over the past three decades, it is a smaller-scale production compared to his prior works, largely confined within a plane for most of its duration. As tensions and emotions escalate, Madolyn struggles to keep herself and her witness alive while determining who she can rely on, potentially serving as a precursor to the much-anticipated Lethal Weapon 5 that Gibson is rumored to direct.

However, it’s worth noting that Flight Risk is quite standard, even ordinary for a thriller genre, making it similar to an average worker. It undeniably fits comfortably within the realm of a casual, entertaining movie you might choose for a Saturday evening, complete with popcorn.
