Florida District Bans Popular LGBT Manga, Recommends Chainsaw Man Instead

As a seasoned gamer and manga enthusiast with over two decades of immersion in this vibrant world, I find myself bewildered by the recent turn of events in Brevard County, Florida. The banning of a seemingly innocuous title like Sasaki & Miyano is not only absurd but also alarmingly hypocritical.

Day after day, book enthusiasts find themselves grappling with more censorship issues, particularly in libraries across the U.S. A wide range of topics, including those dealing with sexual identity and political discourse, appear to be targets for bans. This trend isn’t exclusive to regular books; even manga isn’t immune. Recently, a county in Florida has sparked controversy by prohibiting a seemingly innocent book, but instead, they’ve proposed Chainsaw Man as an alternative.

As a passionate reader myself, I can’t help but express my astonishment over the recent events in Brevard County, Florida. This week, a school board meeting took an unexpected turn when they decided to ban “Sasaki & Miyano” from our schools. The reason? An anonymous complaint about the manga’s right-to-left reading format and its LGBTQ+ content, as it is a BL title. Frankly, I find this decision hard to swallow.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “In my opinion, some students might find this material inappropriate.” I personally don’t think there’s any educational benefit to having books about homosexual relationships accessible at school. Even though I haven’t read reviews of the book Sasaki & Miyano, I proposed other titles that I believe are more suitable for our school library. Now, things got a bit… unconventional.

“Additional options include: Chainsaw Man, To Your Eternity, The Seven Deadly Sins, A Silent Voice, and Sailor Moon.” However, while A Silent Voice does indeed center around adolescent themes, some of these manga titles might appear to contradict each other due to their differing genres or subject matters.

The Rise of Banned Manga

To put it simply, the manga titled “Chainsaw Man” contains mature content such as suicide, abuse, and sexual assault, in addition to its intense violent scenes. This is why it has been rated Mature Audience (MA). Given this content, it seems unlikely that a middle school library would be an appropriate place for it. Similarly, series like “Sailor Moon” address LGBTQ+ themes, making them more suitable for older readers rather than younger audiences in schools.

The controversy surrounding this particular complaint initiated the movement that eventually led to the exclusion of the duo, Sasaki & Miyano, from Brevard County school libraries. This ban is one of many recent instances. Not too long ago, manga titles such as Assassination Classroom were criticized by school boards and politicians based solely on their names. With books and manga facing criticism nationwide, enthusiasts are utilizing social media to enlighten those curious about these mediums regarding suitable reading material. Essentially, if Sasaki & Miyano appeals to your preferences, you might want to exercise caution when considering Chainsaw Man, as both series are exceptional but they differ significantly.
