Florida Man Arrested for Double Murder Almost 50 Years Later

As a seasoned crime drama enthusiast who has binge-watched countless episodes of “Cold Case Files” and “Law & Order: SVU”, I can hardly contain my excitement over this latest development in the 1978 Massachusetts double murder case. Timothy Scott Joley’s arrest feels like a personal victory, akin to solving a decades-long mystery that has haunted me for years.

A nearly half-century-old unsolved crime, the tragic double homicide of a man and a woman in Massachusetts, could potentially see a major development.

Law enforcement officials in Clearwater, Florida, took Timothy Scott Joley, aged 71, into custody and accused him of two counts of murder for the deaths of Theresa Marcoux, 18, and Mark Harnish, 20. The victims were discovered shot dead in 1978 close to a highway in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Joley, who hasn’t entered a plea yet concerning the case, was arrested on October 30. Earlier that month, an anonymous individual provided information about the suspect’s suspected role in the murders to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts. On November 13, District Attorney Anthony Gullini confirmed this in a statement shared on Facebook.

Prior to his arrest, it is claimed that the authorities compared Joley’s fingerprints, which had been stored in state files for about 25 years, to a smeared and potentially bloodied one discovered on the truck’s passenger-side vent window during the initial examination of the crime scene.

At a press conference held on November 13th, Gullini stated to reporters that investigators managed to match Joley’s fingerprints to those stored at the Springfield Police Department. This was possible because Joley had been fingerprinted back in 2000 when he applied for a taxi cab license.

On the early morning of November 19, 1978, Marcoux and Harnish were last spotted alive, having departed from a party hosted by friends. Several hours later, an officer from the West Springfield Police Department, during his patrol duties, discovered their bodies after noticing Harnish’s green 1967 Dodge pickup truck parked at a roadside rest area close to Route 5.

According to the statement shared on social media, the officer observed that the driver’s side window of the truck was shattered and there was blood inside and around the vehicle. Upon further inspection, the officer found the remains of two people, a woman and a man, located slightly over a nearby barrier.

He went on to say, “Researchers found that Theresa and Mark were fatally shot inside the back seat of a pickup truck. Later, their bodies were relocated to the spot where they were eventually found. The postmortem examinations revealed that both victims succumbed to numerous gunshot injuries.

Although no firearm was found in or around the location, a local resident informed the police about numerous gunshots they heard at around 4:00 a.m., and bullet fragments were discovered on the victims’ bodies as well as in the cab of the pickup truck, according to Gullini’s statement.

According to the District Attorney, the investigators found that the print on the truck belonged to Joley’s left thumb and they discovered as well that at the time of the murders, Joley resided in Springfield, was a gun permit holder, and had recently acquired a Colt handgun around a month prior to the crimes.

In Florida, Joley continues to be detained without bail as he awaits his court hearing. At this point, no legal representation has been officially assigned to him, according to records obtained by TopMob News.

On the 5th of November, Joley stood before a judge in Pinellas County, Florida, and chose not to contest extradition, as stated by Gullini on Facebook. It’s expected that Joley will be transported back to Massachusetts within a few weeks to address these allegations.
