Foo Fighters Shockingly Fire Drummer Josh Freese After Just Two Years!

The Foo Fighters will learn to fly again without drummer Josh Freese.

On May 16, the 52-year-old declared that he had been dismissed from the band, a position he assumed in 2023 after the passing of its long-term member, Taylor Hawkins.

On Monday night, the Foo Fighters contacted me to inform that they are choosing a new drummer, as they’ve opted for a different musical path. The reason behind this decision was not disclosed, leaving me feeling a bit sad. (Currently, the band is made up of Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear, and Rami Jaffee.)

Despite any circumstances, he stated, “The last two years have been enjoyable for me, whether on or off the stage, and I’m backing their decision about what’s best for the band.

Freese reflected on the bombshell moment, a first in his career.

Over the course of my 40-year career as a professional drummer, I’ve never been dismissed from a band before. While I’m not feeling angry—just a bit stunned and disheartened by this turn of events, I want to assure everyone that, given my history of freelance work and moving between different bands, I’ll be just fine. On Monday night, I received a call from the Foo Fighters informing me that they’ve chosen to change their drummer’s role within the band,” Freese posted on Instagram. “No specific reason was provided for this decision. :(” (Currently, the band includes Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear, and Rami Jaffee.)

Regardless, he added, ‘The last two years have been wonderful with them, whether it’s on or off the stage. I’m backing their decision on what they think is best for the band.’

In his 40 years of drumming as a professional, he’s never been fired from a band before, but recently, he was let go from the Foo Fighters. While he isn’t angry, he is surprised and a bit disappointed by this turn of events. However, since he has always worked freelance and moved between bands, he reassures everyone that he’s okay. TopMob News has reached out to the group’s rep for comment and has not heard back.

In the May 2023 live stream, the rock band revealed that Freese, who has previously worked with bands such as Devo and Guns N’ Roses among others, would be taking over from Hawkins as his successor. This announcement was made during the unveiling of their 11th studio album titled “But Here We Are”.

It’s not unexpected given that Freese played with the band at their two tribute concerts for Hawkins in Los Angeles and London last year, following Hawkins’ death at age 50 in Colombia earlier in 2022. It was discovered that he had ten different types of substances in his system at the time of his passing.

In December 2022, the band expressed, “Taylor was instrumental in shaping us into the band we are today. Moving ahead, we acknowledge that our evolution as a band will undoubtedly be shaped differently without Taylor.

It’s clear that Taylor valued his fans just as much as you appreciated him, and that won’t change when we reunite. Rest assured, he’ll be with us spiritually at each performance.
