The game has made an impressive effort to introduce the renowned archaeologist to the gaming world through the voice of Troy Baker, a prominent figure in the acting industry. Notably, Troy received endorsement from Harrison Ford himself at The Game Awards 2024, and even the star of Captain America: Brave New World commended the Indiana Jones performance during an interview for the upcoming Marvel film.
Ever since 1981, no actor dared to slip on that iconic fedora in Tinseltown, and I don’t expect anyone else will as long as Harrison Ford has a say in it. For years, the live-action portrayal of Indiana Jones has been synonymous with Ford, and his likeness remained untouched. This was put to the test recently when Troy Baker stepped into the shoes of Indy in “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle“. Players were amazed by how accurately Baker captured Ford’s Indiana Jones, and even the director himself was taken aback by the striking similarity between the two performances.
At The Game Awards 2024, the actor from “The Last of Us” earned overwhelming praise. During this event, Ford expressed his admiration for the actor’s skills, stating, “Had I known how talented he was, I would have wanted to play the role myself.
Ford is being very selective about who takes on his roles moving forward, as he’s reprising many of his past characters from years ago. This shift in approach by the Academy Award-nominated actor was touching to observe. The admiration for him grew even more this week during an interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine.
In his contemplation of his career and the development of AI for digital counterparts of aged or passed actors, the star of Captain America 4 expressed, “Artificial intelligence isn’t necessary to rob my essence. It’s already being done affordably with clever thoughts and skill. (Baker) delivered magnificently, and it didn’t require AI to achieve that.
Ford’s perspective on AI is understandable given the industry’s goal to employ AI for making actors appear on screen even when they are not physically present. However, Ford suggests that Artificial Intelligence might not be the solution to the ethical quandary, as he finds Baker’s “exceptional” performance demonstrates that securing the right talent can be more impactful than relying on AI.
This holds true for Baker’s audition process as well; in this case, Todd Howard from Bethesda Game Studios shared that he wasn’t initially keen on having Baker play Indy. However, the unconventional blind casting auditions kept bringing Baker to the forefront. For any actor, it’s quite an honor to receive accolades for embodying a renowned character, especially when the portrayal is done with due respect.
