Survival games are currently having a surge in popularity, and recent titles such as last year’s “Pacific Drive” demonstrate that there’s plenty of creative potential left within this genre. The appeal of survival games seems to be growing rather than shrinking. As for “Forever Skies,” which has been under development for some time now, it appears to be launching at just the right moment. Although the gameplay structure is somewhat familiar, there’s enough fresh ideas present to establish its unique identity.
It’s been in early access since June 2023
For approximately one and three-quarters years now, Far From Home developers have been meticulously revamping the game “Forever Skies”. Over this period, the aeronautical survival adventure has undergone a significant transformation, with no less than 34 updates. The initial version is barely recognizable today, thanks to additions like resource extraction tools, safer ways to prepare and store toxic food, recycling stations, a wider array of airship customization options, improved inventory management, enhanced locale diversity, and more. These are just some of the many improvements incorporated into “Forever Skies” version 1.0.
Release date, platforms, and price
On April 14, 2025, “Forever Skies” will be available for purchase on PC via Steam and PlayStation 5. The game will cost $29.99 on Steam and $34.99 for the base version on PlayStation. For those using PlayStation, there’s a Deluxe Edition that can be pre-ordered, which comes with 5 exclusive airship decorations, 5 PSN avatars, early access for 72 hours, and all of this for an additional $5. Lastly, PS Plus subscribers have the opportunity to pre-order until the release date on April 14th, securing a 20% discount.
What it’s about
In a future where Earth has been shrouded in toxic smog for centuries due to an unexplained ecological catastrophe, making it inhospitable for humans, you play as a scientist on a quest to find a legendary cure. You’ll delve into decaying cities, gather resources, analyze materials, and upgrade your advanced airship in a bid to rescue the remaining fragments of humanity from their interstellar exile and return them to their rightful home planet. Unraveling the enigma behind Earth’s environmental ruin and discovering why previous attempts to return failed are key aspects of your adventure that unfold as you progress.
Developed by an experienced team
The game you’re looking at is developed by Far From Home, a skilled team based in Wroclaw, Poland. They boast a rich background in creating numerous popular games. Their portfolio includes projects from the Dying Light series, The Medium, and Outriders. When assessing the caliber of a game, consider the expertise that its developers bring to the table.
Airship customization
At the beginning of the game “Forever Skies“, you’ll come across an abandoned airship that was left behind after a previous expedition failed. However, this airship isn’t just a means of transportation; it transforms into much more. As you add various modules and equipment, the airship morphs into your lab, workshop, and residence. With numerous customization options such as new rooms, furniture, and decorations, the airship takes on a unique character that reflects your personal touch.
Just be aware that “Forever Skies” can be quite dangerous. The structural integrity of your airship is crucial, so you’ll need to keep it in good condition throughout your journey.
Airship maintenance
In summary, a mid-air collision or reckless maneuvering around an old radio tower isn’t just going to damage the body of your airship; it will also necessitate fuel for engines (which can be sourced from debris), power for scientific devices (requiring batteries), and helium for the balloon. Essentially, there’s a lot to maintain on your airship during your adventures.
Science
As a scientist, scientific advancements are crucial for the development of the game ‘Forever Skies’. Soon after obtaining your airship, you’ll be tasked with researching and manufacturing a scanner using the 3D printer onboard. This scanner will allow you to gather information about various trinkets scattered across the raised platforms and windfarms accessible via your airship. Items such as rusty turbines, decaying building materials, drifting tumbleweed can be scanned, and this data can be directly fed into an onboard research station, helping you create fuel, cooking appliances, comfort items, airship parts, or anything else to improve your journey above Earth’s ailing green clouds. Blueprints found throughout the world also offer additional options for crafting items essential for survival and exploration.
Survival mechanics
To ensure both your safety in the game and the well-being of your airship, it’s crucial to monitor and manage four key aspects: hunger, thirst, health, and energy. Energy can be replenished during downtime by taking a rest, while health – at least initially – is primarily affected by high falls but can recover using collectable health kits. However, beware of the dangers posed by hunger and thirst, as the edible resources in this toxic environment are potentially harmful unless properly prepared (cooked or purified). Therefore, learning how to boil moths and filter water from contaminated sources should be your top research and crafting priorities.
Survival activities
In most of your time playing Forever Skies, you’ll be primarily engaged in scavenging Earth’s elevated ruins for resources. These will include mechanical components, batteries, health supplies, and other useful items that serve as the foundation for both you and your airship. A particularly handy tool for this task is an airship-mounted turret, which can extract raw materials like metal and glass using a transparent laser beam. These basic materials are essential for crafting the game’s wide variety of items.
You can descend to the Earth’s surface
Eventually, you’ll make it there. Initially, your body and your safety gear might not hold up against Earth’s toxic haze, but with sufficient scientific knowledge, you’ll manage. Once on the planet’s surface, you’ll find peculiar plants and animals; vegetation that has learned to thrive in the harsh conditions and creatures that have mastered survival. It’s a bizarre world beneath the dust, and it might just be here where we discover remedies for viral infections.
Combat
Absolutely! In the game titled “Forever Skies“, you can expect encounters with combat. Similar to other games of its kind, an abandoned and inhospitable world has spawned hostile life forms. You’ll be tasked with utilizing a variety of weapons for self-defense. From sneak peeks provided by the team at Far From Home, we’ve seen images of menacing mantis-like creatures that will pose a threat. Additional enemies, including possibly rival factions, are expected to appear as well. Currently, the gameplay is relatively tranquil, leading some to question whether combat is necessary in this game. However, if it’s implemented thoughtfully and without becoming too overwhelming, it could add an exciting element to the game.
4-player co-op
Among the highly anticipated community requests during the game’s early access phase was introduced on December 9th and will be accessible at launch. In fact, clips showcasing players collaborating to gather resources have been a common sight in the shared gameplay previews so far. The fun of constructing airships, exploring, and mere survival is designed for squads consisting of up to four individuals.
Post-launch roadmap
For the game Forever Skies, there’s a detailed plan set after its launch, more like a journey roadmap. Starting summer 2025, you can expect an airship expansion update. Later in summer, early fall, a significant content update is planned. And as we approach winter, around December 2025, get ready for a seasonal update, maybe with some snowy elements!
PS5 demo currently available
Until the game’s release on April 14th, a demo is accessible for PlayStation users directly from the PS Store. This demo encompasses at least the initial hours of play, including obtaining an airship, setting the stage for the narrative’s mystery, and exploring various platforms that creak above the green clouds. As for PC players, there was previously a demo on Steam, but it is currently not listed.
PC requirements
To ensure a smooth gameplay experience with Forever Skies on your computer, at the very least, you’ll require an Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor, RX 580 8GB VRAM, Intel Arc A750, or GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GPU, and 12GB of RAM. For the best performance as suggested by the game’s Steam page, consider an Intel Core i7-7700k or Ryzen 7 3800X, RX 5700-XT, Intel Arc A770, or GeForce RTX 2070 GPU, and 16GB of RAM. Regardless of your configuration, you’ll need a minimum of 31GB of storage space available.
