Forget Ironheart, These Are The 5 Worst Things Mephisto Has Done In Marvel History

In the Disney+ series “Ironheart,” the character Mephisto, whose arrival fans had been eagerly anticipating since “WandaVision” premiered as the first MCU series on Disney+, and who was also referenced in “Agatha All Along,” made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Despite his first appearance being teased for quite some time, it was in “Ironheart” where he finally materialized, extending a proposition to the young hero. However, as fans of Marvel Comics are aware, Mephisto’s deals almost always lead to unfavorable outcomes, and he rarely strikes bargains with superheroes unless he has a specific plan for how this deal will ultimately play out in his favor.

As a devoted comic book enthusiast, I’ve always found Mephisto to be an intriguing character since his debut alongside the Silver Surfer in Marvel’s early days. However, it was his pact with Ghost Rider that truly solidified his infamy. Yet, that deal wasn’t even the darkest bargain this devilish figure from Marvel has struck with someone.

5) Turned Johnny Blaze Into Ghost Rider

Johnny Blaze initially grew up under the guidance of Crash Simpson, a fellow stunt rider, following the departure of his mother and the demise of his father. His birth mother, Naomi, was aware that Mephisto had cursed her lineage to embody the Ghost Rider. In an attempt to protect Johnny from this fate, Naomi struck another bargain with Mephisto, which stipulated that Johnny wouldn’t assume the role of the Ghost Rider. However, after her passing, Mephisto reneged on his promise, claiming that while Johnny would not become “The” Ghost Rider, he was still destined to transform into “a” Ghost Rider.

At some point, Johnny discovered that his friend Crash had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Seeking help from the unknown, Johnny delved into occult studies and inadvertently summoned Mephisto instead of Satan. Not realizing his mistake, Johnny entered a pact with Mephisto to cure Crash’s cancer in return for serving Mephisto and enduring an eternity in Hell. True to form, Mephisto’s deal had a catch: he cured Crash, but the cancer-free Crash met his untimely death in a motorcycle accident. Bound by the agreement with Mephisto, Johnny was fused with the Spirit of Vengeance, transforming him into the Ghost Rider.

4) Mephisto Wrote The Avengers Out of Existence

In the Marvel Universe’s latest plotline, titled “Heroes Reborn“, an unexpected shift in the timeline takes place without any clear reason. The Avengers cease to exist and the Squadron Supreme emerge as Earth’s strongest heroes. Notably, they possess extraordinary power, defeating characters like Hulk and Galactus and eliminating many villains from existence. However, one hero retained memories of the original world – Blade. He then gathered a team with the aim of restoring the timeline back to its original state.

In this alternate reality, Phil Coulson, once a SHIELD Agent, held the presidency. However, an issue arose when Captain America instructed Deadpool to eliminate Coulson during the Secret Empire plotline. Here’s the twist: HYDRA had taken control of Captain America, transforming him into a fascist leader. The betrayal was too much for Coulson to bear. After his demise, he struck a deal with Mephisto, promising to rearrange the world according to his desires in exchange. Mephisto, agreeing to this pact, erased the Avengers from existence.

3) He Stole the Soul of Doctor Doom’s Mother

In a different reality, Doctor Doom wasn’t a menacing villain for Marvel Comics. However, on Earth-616, his mother, Cynthia von Doom, struck a pact with Mephisto that set this dark path in motion. When alive, Cynthia was adept in the arcane arts and sought to safeguard her people from an oppressive and corrupt baron. Realizing she couldn’t do it on her own, Cynthia entered into a deal with Mephisto to acquire the power necessary to combat this tyrant.

In the comic book “Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment” (1989), it’s shown that Cynthia, who received powers from Mephisto, struggled to control her new abilities. Tragically, these powers led to the loss of innocent lives, including many young children. Overwhelmed by the consequences, she gave up her powers and perished, leaving her soul in Mephisto’s possession. For years, Mephisto tormented Cynthia’s soul, leading Doctor Doom to study mystic arts with the intention of rescuing her. This quest turned Mephisto into one of Doom’s most formidable adversaries. Moreover, Doom combined magic and technology as a result, solidifying his status among Marvel’s toughest villains.

2) Spider-Man – One More Day

In the storyline of “The Amazing Spider-Man” Volume 1, issue 545, Mephisto made a highly debated deal. This took place during the “Civil War” saga, where Iron Man pressured Spider-Man to expose his true identity publicly, hoping to win over more heroes for his cause. However, this decision by Iron Man was self-serving as it placed everyone close to Peter Parker, especially Aunt May, in harm’s way. Unfortunately, it was Aunt May who suffered the consequences when an assassin targeted her. In a desperate attempt to save his dying aunt, Spider-Man agreed to anything Mephisto offered.

In this scenario, we encounter the tale known as “One More Day,” where Mephisto presents a deal to Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. He proposes that he’ll save Aunt May’s life by altering their timeline and wiping out their marriage from history. Desperate for an escape, they accept, leading to the commencement of the “Brand New Day” storyline. Later, Mephisto reveals to Doctor Strange that their daughter, Mayday Parker, was destined to vanquish him once he conquered Earth in the future, so his objective was to thwart her birth.

1) Mephisto is Who Convinced Thanos to Snap Half the Universe Away

The tale of Thanos wielding the Infinity Gauntlet and wiping out half the universe’s inhabitants is well-known, particularly through the Marvel Cinematic Universe and “Avengers: Infinity War.” Yet, the comic book narrative presents a slightly altered account. Unlike his screen portrayal who perceived his genocidal act as a means to enhance life for the remaining population, Thanos acted out of love in the comics. His target was not balance or prosperity, but rather Death itself, as he harbored a deep affection for this cosmic entity.

Initially, it seems that Thanos eliminated half the universe’s inhabitants out of a random fancy for Death. Yet, I believe some viewers overlook the fact that Mephisto, who appeared to be serving Thanos, was in reality his manipulative ally. Akin to a devil whispering in one’s ear, Mephisto suggested this path as a means to win over Death. He orchestrated the famous snap, making him equally culpable with Thanos for this heinous act of mass murder. In the end, it transpires that Thanos’ actions failed to captivate Death, implying his destructive deed was futile.
