At the close of last year, a diligent developer successfully compressed Microsoft’s substantial Windows 11 2024 update to a ‘DVD-sized’ (3.54GB) package, leaving room for additional storage. More recently, this developer has also been able to operate Windows 11 on less than 200MB of RAM. Sharing this remarkable accomplishment on platform X, the developer hinted:
I somehow got Windows 11 to operate using only 184MB of RAM, even in Safe Mode, which I find utterly incredible and may have set a new record.
In simpler terms, Tiny11 is a custom software made by NTDEV that provides a smaller, more manageable version of Windows 11. This scaled-down version can run on older computers which may not be compatible with the standard Windows 11 due to its strict system requirements. Notably, this software reduces the original 20GB installation size of Windows 11 so that it only requires less than 4GB of RAM to operate.
While it is possible to operate Windows 11 on equipment that isn’t officially supported, as demonstrated by a user on NTDEV’s post, there are significant limitations when dealing with hardware that only has 200MB of RAM. As this concerned user pointed out, issues such as broken audio, the absence of a working internet connection, and the inability to install MSI applications or run DirectX applications may arise.
The app removes unnecessary applications and excess software from Windows 11, keeping only the fundamentals. Although the newest version of Tiny11 is tiny, it raises some doubts about its practicality.
Starting October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide support for Windows 10, which might result in an unprecedented number of outdated computers. To encourage users to upgrade to Windows 11, Microsoft has employed various tactics such as full-screen multipage popup ads and emphasizing the operating system’s usefulness for keeping up with celebrity news, stock market trends, and weather forecasts.
Users remain determined to continue using Windows 10, even though it is approaching its end. This persistence in sticking with the current version may be due to the high standards required for Windows 11 and issues found within its design.
