For about a month now, Robert Eggers’ movie “Nosferatu” has been playing in cinemas. The film has become a significant box office hit, being the highest-grossing production of Eggers’ directorial career so far and currently ranking second for Focus Features in terms of box office earnings. Critics and audiences alike have praised this remake of the 1922 film “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror”. It seems that vampire tales still strike a chord with viewers, particularly adaptations of the original vampire story, “Dracula”.
The original “Nosferatu” tale was actually an unauthorized version of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula.” This movie backstory is quite intriguing. Consequently, Nosferatu can be considered one among numerous interpretations of the story. Nevertheless, Eggers’ “Nosferatu” is expected to become a classic, but it doesn’t hold the title of the best adaptation of this timeless tale. That honor goes to another film: Francis Ford Coppola’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Released in 1992, “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” features Gary Oldman as Count Dracula, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, and Keanu Reeves. Similar to many tales preceding it, the story follows Dracula who develops affection for a young woman named Mina, who is Jonathan Harker’s fiancée and solicitor. In his quest for Mina, Dracula instills fear among Mina’s companions, leading to the introduction of vampire expert Abraham Van Helsing. His objective: to put an end to Dracula’s terrorizing reign. While the narrative is common in most “Dracula” adaptations, Coppola’s version stands out due to its adherence to the original material. Although it incorporates a romantic subplot and slightly softens Dracula’s character, the film accurately portrays the novel’s chilling elements, particularly those related to Harker’s experiences of horror and dread.
The movie mirrors Stoker’s novel visually, not just in terms of setting. What makes the book a timeless classic and an intriguing read is its vivid moments and descriptions that seem extraordinary and almost unbelievable. The film manages to convey this by not only using creative camera work but also through its costumes. In Coppola’s movie, the costumes – along with the hair and makeup design – are historically accurate for the time period yet they are also extravagant and over-the-top. For instance, Oldman’s Dracula stands out with his ornate red robe and meticulously styled hair. Similarly, the costumes of Dracula’s brides are impressive; it’s worth mentioning that this film won the Best Costume Design award at the Academy Awards in 1993.
The primary reason why Bram Stoker’s Dracula stands out as the finest adaptation of the classic novel could be attributed to the exceptional performances, especially Gary Oldman’s portrayal of Dracula. Oldman’s interpretation of Dracula is not just a monstrous character but a multi-dimensional one that the movie delves into through various stages. Initially, we see Dracula with his tragic past and loss of his wife, then as a solitary predator living in isolation, and finally as a reinvigorated being seeking new affection. Essentially, vampire tales are human narratives, and Oldman’s performance underscores the humanity within this legendary bloodthirsty character.
In the film “Nosferatu,” Eggers offers a captivating and intriguing modern interpretation of the traditional “Dracula” tale, placing it among the top adaptations we’ve witnessed. It truly deserves all the acclaim and success it has received. However, Coppola’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” still stands out as the most enticing version to delve into.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video. Nosferatu is in theaters now.
