Forget the Joker, The Penguin Just Created the Best Villain for The Batman: Part II

As a movie enthusiast who’s spent countless nights in the dimly lit corners of cinemas, I can confidently say that The Penguin has truly outshone expectations and deserves to be the main antagonist in “The Batman: Part II.

There’s been a great deal of anticipation among DC fans regarding the possibility of the Joker serving as the main antagonist in “The Batman: Part II”. Director Matt Reeves has hinted at this with a chilling scene featuring rising star Barry Keoghan as the latest portrayal of the infamous DC villain. While there’s plenty of enthusiasm for Keoghan to step into a larger role in Reeves’ Gotham City, it seems that The Penguin might not be the right fit as the villain “The Batman: Part II” requires or deserves. Following the Riddler’s reign of terror over both Bruce Wayne and Gotham City in “The Batman”, it appears that Oswald Cobb is the one who should fill the same role in “Part II”.

Following the occurrences in “The Penguin”, it seems fitting that Colin Farrell’s crime lord character should undeniably take the lead as the primary antagonist in “The Batman: Part II“. While other villains such as the Joker, Riddler, or others may have a part to play in the movie, it now seems unlikely that any significant events can unfold without Oswald Cobblepot (the Penguin) being at the forefront.

In the end of “The Penguin”, Oswald Cobblepot turned the tables on the criminal hierarchy in Gotham City. The Falcones and Maroni’s lost their influence, and Oz orchestrated a rebellion among the underestimated lieutenants of other Gotham gangs. Additionally, he pulled off a strategic political maneuver, forging connections with key figures and placing himself in a position where he’s almost immune to challenge.

In “The Batman: Part II”, Reeves should lean on The Penguin for rivalry with Bruce Wayne not just because he rules the city, but primarily because Oswald Cobblepot showcased in “The Penguin” that he’s equally as sinister and ruthless as any villain. While The Joker is known for his twisted humor, Oswald is a chilling, heartless murderer who can effortlessly take the life of those closest to him without blinking an eye – as demonstrated by him doing so to the only person who ever cared about him.

Reeves, Farrell, and the creator of ‘The Penguin’, Lauren LeFranc, crafted a tale that transformed a humorously menacing mafia figure into one of the most complex and terrifying antagonists in live-action DC narratives. This character now possesses a lethal mix of ambition and force, making him an intimidating adversary for Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne. He embodies everything that Bruce despises about Gotham City, yet they share many similarities. Both characters are deeply rooted in the very soul of Gotham, suggesting that the city molded them, making them more fitting rivals than Batman and the Joker. In essence, it could be argued that the city shaped each of them, creating two ideal adversaries for one another.

It’s exciting to imagine Keoghan’s Joker causing chaos in the movies, but he’ll have to hold off until ‘The Batman: Part III’ for his full reign. Instead, it’s Oswald Cobb’s turn to shine in ‘The Batman: Part II’.
