What you need to know
- A bug caused weather widgets and graphics powered by Microsoft to show temperatures as high as 30,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
- The issue seems to affect the Windows 11 weather widget and other displays powered by Microsoft’s weather information.
- Generally speaking, the earth stays cooler than 30,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
As a seasoned tech enthusiast with over two decades of tinkering under my belt, I must admit that this latest Windows 11 weather widget bug has me scratching my head and chuckling at the same time. Having witnessed a fair share of software glitches throughout my journey, it’s nothing new to see an oddball error here and there. However, the idea of a worldwide temperature spike that would make even our dear star, the Sun, blush is downright absurd, even for tech standards!
In my tech-savvy perspective, for many parts of the globe, Christmas and the festive season often bring snowy landscapes. However, in other areas, it’s the heart of summer, making this time of year quite warm. But in a fantastical scenario painted by the Windows 11 weather widget, by the end of 2024, we might expect roads melting and our familiar world ablaze. An unusual glitch seems to have affected Microsoft’s weather graphics, causing temperatures to soar as high as an incredible 30,000 degrees Fahrenheit!
It seems there’s some confusion about why Windows 11 weather widgets and other Microsoft-related weather apps are predicting global temperatures higher than the surface of the Sun, which typically hovers around 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The inside of the Sun, however, is approximately 27 million degrees Fahrenheit. Fortunately, we won’t experience temperatures in the millions in Microsoft’s depicted apocalyptic heatwave. What’s certain is that this issue appears to be quite prevalent.
Reddit user Guilty_Parking posted an entry about their computer displaying a temperature of 30,014 degrees Fahrenheit on the Windows 11 weather app. Likewise, user darkfae83 also had a comparable experience.

It’s plausible that this glitch is intended as a tribute to Doom Eternal or perhaps a sign of Microsoft’s dedication to addressing climate change. However, it’s more likely that it’s simply a programming error. I haven’t encountered the bug on my computer and have been unable to reproduce it, but our colleague Zachary Boddy has experienced this issue on one of their devices.
I anticipate the issue with the bug should get resolved shortly. In the meantime, it’s provided some amusing moments, allowing me to share one of the most humorous online videos I’ve come across.
