As a seasoned gamer who vividly remembers the gaming gold rush of 2006, I must say it’s intriguing to see a long-forgotten gem like Platypus making a comeback. Back then, I was juggling between titles like Zelda: Twilight Princess and Gears of War, and I can’t help but wonder if this quirky scroller shooter would have fit nicely among the heavyweights of that era.

View Urgent ForecastIn a nod to the past, a somewhat overlooked game from 2006, the PSP (PlayStation Portable), is making a comeback with a modern, multi-platform remake. The year 2006 was packed with heavy hitters like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Bully, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Gears of War, Saints Row, Okami, Guitar Hero II, Final Fantasy XII, New Super Mario Bros, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas, Prey, Dead Rising, Just Cause, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. While this isn’t an exhaustive list, it gives you an idea of how impressive 2006 was. Many games from that year didn’t get the attention they deserved and were lost in the shuffle.
In the year 2006, Platypus, a scroller shooter developed by Squashy Software and Idigicon, made its debut exclusively on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) console. If you were among those who owned a PSP in 2006, you might recall this game, but for most others, it’s likely unfamiliar. Of note, Platypus was exclusive to the PSP until 2009, when it was ported to the Xbox 360.
Originally released on PC in 2002, this game is nearly two decades old, but it’s receiving a remake for platforms such as Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. The remake goes by the name Platypus Remastered, though its official release date hasn’t been announced yet. However, you can watch the teaser trailer for it below.
22 years after its initial release, the renowned indie shoot ’em up Platypus is making a comeback, sporting an upgrade! Buckle up for an exhilarating ride into the nonstop action of this swift, frenetic, and delightfully entertaining arcade-style shooter!
The cost of the remake remains uncertain when it eventually gets released. Also, it’s unclear whether a physical copy will be available or if it will strictly be a digital release.
