As a seasoned gamer with memories spanning decades, I must admit that when I first heard about Ys vs. Trails in the Sky being remastered and localized for the Western market, my jaw dropped faster than an old man’s trousers during a game of Twister. I remember playing the original on my trusty PSP back in 2010, feeling like a lone pioneer exploring uncharted territories in the realm of crossover fighters.
We’re going to file this one under ‘Announcements No One Ever Saw Coming, Not in a Million Years’. Ys vs. Trails in the Sky is being remastered and localised here in the West for the first time ever, 15 years after its original release.
This game is a fusion of two major Falcom franchises: Ys and Trails. Originally released on the PSP in 2010, it has only been officially distributed in Japan. However, it will be available on both PS5 and PS4 in the year 2025.
The revamped edition of this game is being distributed by a freshly founded company called Refint/Games. This updated version offers numerous enhancements and new features compared to the initial release. It boasts high-definition graphics, runs at 60 frames per second, includes local multiplayer as well as online gaming options, and features all-new English voiceovers – which is quite surprising!
Wow, can you believe it? Back in an interview a few months ago, I was lucky enough to chat with the president of Falcom, Toshihiro Kondo, and he casually mentioned Ys vs. Trails in the Sky – or Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki as it’s known in Japan! What a delightful surprise for fans like me!
Inquired whether the developer might one day create a Trails-style fighting game, considering the expansive roster of the series, and Kondo responded: “Interestingly, there’s already a game somewhat similar to that, named Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki. It’s a fighting game with an action system.
Given the opportunity and sufficient means, it would bring us great joy to recreate something similar.
Indeed, it’s exciting news! The beloved series Ys vs. Trails in the Sky is returning this year, making for a particularly rich lineup for fans of the Trails franchise. Trails from Zero 2 drops in February, Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter aims for an autumn/fall release, and there’s a strong possibility that its sequel, Kai no Kiseki, will be localized sometime in 2025 as well.
