Former EA Devs Announce NBA Street Spiritual Successor

As a longtime fan of arcade sports games, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia when I hear about “The Run: Got Next.” NBA Street was one of my go-to games back in the day, and it’s been a while since we’ve had an arcade basketball title that captured the essence of street hoops. With EA Sports BIG shut down and simulation-heavy sports games dominating the scene, it felt like we were left in the dust.

The final installment in the NBA Street series, released in 2007, marked a significant transition as EA Sports BIG was disbanded the following year. Since then, fans of arcade-style sports games have seen limited attention with the industry’s focus shifting towards simulation games. However, there has been a recent resurgence from indie developers, reminiscent of the past, with titles like “Tape to Tape” featuring roguelike elements in arcade hockey and “Robo Dunk” introducing robots for NBA Jam-style basketball action. Now, an ex-EA team has unveiled “The Run: Got Next,” which aims to be a spiritual successor to NBA Street, potentially signaling a new era of arcade sports games.

“The Run: Got Next” is a thrilling 3-on-3 arcade basketball experience. Although the developers have yet to reveal any gameplay footage, the teaser trailer exudes an enjoyable atmosphere and suggests diverse mechanics. In their description, the developers emphasize, “This isn’t a simulation. The Run is user-friendly, swift, seamless, and most importantly, entertaining. Signature slam dunks, impressive blocks, sleek ball handling, tricks, long-range logos, and alley-oops are just some elements we’re infusing into our gameplay. Our focus is on delivering a unique blend of style and substance while staying true to the essence of street hoops.”

If you find this scenario resonating, you may be fond of titles such as NBA Street and NBA Ballers. Nevertheless, it’s crucial to mention that The Run prioritizes multiplayer experiences at present. Although a single-player mode could potentially be introduced later on, Play by Play Studios is intent on highlighting the social aspect of gaming for this project. This approach may seem daring considering the vocal requests for features like Dynasty Mode from fans. However, let’s hope that The Run successfully delivers an engaging multiplayer experience.

An intriguing aspect that could attract viewers to “The Run” is Play by Play’s decision to infuse roguelite elements into online gameplay. Each session will present new challenges as you encounter varying obstacles, ensuring a unique gaming experience. In an interview with IGN, Play by Play assured fans that the game would be free of microtransactions that could influence gameplay, allowing everyone to compete on an even footing.

As a gamer excitedly waiting for its release, I can’t wait for “The Run: Got Next” to drop in 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and my trusty PC. Here’s hoping the developers will give us a sneak peek of the gameplay in the upcoming months!
