The anticipated question regarding the impact of recently announced U.S. tariffs on the Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch on June 5, has sparked curiosity. Ex-members of Nintendo of America’s PR team, Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang, express optimism that Nintendo won’t increase the console’s price due to these tariffs.
In their latest video discussion, the duo explore the topic of tariffs and the projected price of the Switch 2. Ellis posits that Nintendo could potentially absorb the costs associated with tariffs and maintain the $449.99 pricing for the Switch 2. He expresses his belief that Nintendo has the financial flexibility to do so, stating “They have the means, they can afford it, it wouldn’t significantly impact them.” Ellis emphasizes that this is a strategy not many other companies can implement due to their unique financial circumstances.
According to Yang, if Nintendo absorbs the extra expenses caused by tariffs, it could gain significant favor among its consumers. This is crucial, he says, because Nintendo has been receiving criticism regarding its pricing and this move could help alleviate some of that negativity.
Yang stated that by addressing the current unfavorable opinions regarding pricing and game quality, particularly in relation to Mario Kart World, they could regain some goodwill from their existing fanbase.
She added, “Instead of making customers pay more or delivering a perplexing message about raising the price after initially announcing $450, you can begin your pre-order strategy as scheduled. You can also gradually move toward your June 5 launch, which is fast approaching. This approach seems to improve the current negative image that Nintendo has.
In response to concerns about the high price of the Nintendo Switch 2, priced at $449.99, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser advised fans who can’t afford it to explore other options within the Switch family to enjoy Nintendo games instead.
As a devoted fan, I can relate when some fellow enthusiasts might find the price of Switch 2 a bit steep. To ensure everyone gets a chance to join our gaming universe and interact with these beloved characters in their captivating worlds, we’ve made sure that alternative Switch platforms are accessible. This way, regardless of where you start within our platform lineup, you can still appreciate the value and enjoyment these games offer.
For now, analysts predict that the impact of tariffs on the Switch 2 may just be the first step. Specifically, Mat Piscatella from Circana anticipates that the true long-term effects on Nintendo, particularly regarding their pricing strategy for the new console and its games, will become more noticeable in its second year.
