Discussions revolving around if upcoming Sony gaming consoles will be digital-exclusive have prompted ex-PlayStation CEO Shawn Layden to voice his opinions about the PlayStation 6. In an interview with Kiwi Talkz podcast, he touched upon the possibility of a disc-less PS6 and the current landscape of video games.
Shawn Layden is of the opinion that Sony wouldn’t release a purely digital PlayStation 6. He thinks it would be tough to promote and sell such a console without a disc drive. Although the gaming market has witnessed an upsurge in digital-only consoles, Layden feels that the obstacles Sony encounters are too substantial for them to adopt this approach.
Layden reinforces his argument by highlighting the differences between Sony and Microsoft’s market reach. The PlayStation brand extends to 170 countries worldwide, including some areas with limited internet connectivity. In developing or remote regions, where stable internet connections can be slow or non-existent, traditional game discs become crucial for gaming access since digital-only options may not be as practical due to these infrastructure challenges.
He noted that Microsoft has had greater success in promoting digital consoles because of its strong presence in countries like the U.S., UK, and Australia – regions known for robust internet infrastructure. These countries are well-suited to manage the requirements of a fully digital gaming environment, making digital consoles more practical and attractive.
PlayStation enthusiasts felt somewhat reassured by Layden’s discussion points, yet some remain skeptical. While numerous users think Sony won’t launch PS6 without a disc drive for playing physical games, others worry it could be an optional extra. The PlayStation 5 Pro came with separate attachments, which were initially provided with the standard PlayStation 5 model.
It’s possible that Sony could introduce the PS6 without an inbuilt disc drive, offering a separate accessory for playing physical games instead. If this were the case, gamers might need to buy additional accessories to enjoy traditional game disks. At present, Sony hasn’t confirmed anything about the PS6’s design, but such a move is being speculated.
The debate between physical and digital games has long been a topic of conversation. Lately, there’s been renewed focus on the fact that when you purchase digital games, it’s more like acquiring a license than owning them outright. If the publisher decides to withdraw the license or shut down the servers, you could lose access to your game, which has led some people to favor physical games over their digital counterparts.
