Former PlayStation Boss Sheds Light on Cancellation of Forgotten PS4 Game

The legendary PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida has shared insights on an unpublished PS4 game, which unfortunately never made its debut despite the console being available in the market for several years. During the initial phase of the PS4, a small number of games were announced but subsequently abandoned. One such game that garnered significant attention was Capcom’s planned action title Deep Down. Even after over a decade, fans continue to express curiosity about this elusive game. However, it is another canceled PS4 project from a Ubisoft veteran that we now have answers for, thanks to Yoshida’s recent disclosure.

In a chat with MinnMax, the former head of PlayStation Studios, Yoshida, shared some fresh details about the fate of the game ‘Wild’. Originally developed by Wild Sheep Studio and initially slated for exclusive release on PS4 by Sony in 2014, ‘Wild’ later aimed to transition to the PS5. However, it ultimately didn’t make the cut, mainly due to issues with its director, Michel Ancel. Yoshida recently disclosed more about ‘Wild’, stating that it was one of the most painful games he had to abandon during his time at PlayStation.

Yoshida mentioned that they collaborated with Michel Ancel’s team, Wild Sheep, on a project named “Wild”. He found the concept fascinating, so they spent quite some time working together, potentially switching platforms along the way. However, eventually, the project had to be terminated, which was truly disheartening for them.

In an explanation of the issues that arose, Yoshida mentioned, “Many excellent concepts didn’t fully come to fruition within the final game design.” He added, “The initial ideas were quite expansive, such as the proposed game map being the size of Europe.

It’s not surprising that Yoshida attributed the downfall of the project to the scale of Wild, given Ancel’s past criticisms for proposing grand ideas that are excessively large, making their execution incredibly difficult. This problem has also been raised regarding Beyond Good & Evil 2, another project under Ancel’s direction, which hasn’t appeared any closer to release than it was a few years ago.
