As a researcher with over two decades of gaming under my belt, witnessing Fortnite’s metamorphosis from a simple base defense game to a multi-dimensional platform that rivals Roblox is nothing short of breathtaking. Now, Epic Games has announced Fortnite Ballistic – the Unreal Engine version of Counter-Strike! It’s like watching a time-lapse video of evolution in action.
The origins of Fortnite are quite surprising. It initially took shape within Epic Games during an internal creative event known as Game Jam in 2011. Interestingly, Cliff Bleszinski – who had parted ways with the company more than a decade earlier – was the lead developer at that time. Intriguingly enough, Fortnite actually began life as a game centered around base defense! Can anyone recall those early days anymore?
From its groundbreaking debut of the battle royale genre, Fortnite has consistently evolved throughout the years by introducing fresh maps, modes, and a distinct feature known as Fortnite Experiences. Set for release in 2023, Experiences enabled players to construct entirely novel projects using Unreal Engine 5 and Fortnite resources, effectively transforming the game from a basic defense title into Epic Games’ take on Roblox. Now, Epic is introducing an additional dimension to keep pace with other genres.
Today, Epic Games unveiled Fortnite Ballistic – their rendition of Counter-Strike using Unreal Engine. This is quite a departure from where it began, and honestly, I’m thrilled about the concept. Although Fortnite has offered first-person mode since its inception, it hasn’t been particularly useful or further developed since its launch.
Here’s a quick, too-long-didn’t-read of what Ballistic will entail.
- Launching in early access on December 11 with Ranked + Unranked.
- Ballistic is a round-based 5v5 competitive game mode.
- It will launch with a single map, Skyline 10
- It will feature a starting set of weapons and a limited number of items for players to use.
- Ballistic will have a Counter-Strike-like player economy.
As a researcher studying the gaming industry, it seems that Ballistic is adopting the blueprint established by Counter-Strike over two decades ago for Fortnite. This design includes round-based gameplay, no respawning between rounds, and an economy driven by performance. Consequently, Steam may be facing another competitor in the free-to-play market vying for a piece of its market share.
At the beginning of each round in Ballistic, players are divided into two groups: attackers and defenders. The goal of the attackers is to strategically position a Rift Point Device at one out of two designated locations on the map, which could cause a rift in reality if successfully planted and detonated. On the other hand, defenders strive to prevent this device from being set up and exploded.
There are no respawns in Ballistic — a round is over if the Rift Point Device explodes, or either team is fully eliminated. After 6 rounds, players will swap sides, giving defenders a chance to be attackers and vice-versa. The game is over when either team has won 7 rounds total!”
Additionally, players will gain currency called Credits throughout the game based on their individual and team performance. These Credits can be utilized to purchase an assortment of weapons and items that will aid in improving their chances of winning. Initially, you’ll start with a Ranger Pistol and 800 Credits. In this game, known as Ballistic, Credits can be earned by securing eliminations and planting the Rift Point Device, and they can be spent within each round at the beginning to acquire extra items or weapons.
In summary, this game doesn’t appear to offer anything notably distinct from Counter-Strike. While other competitors like Valorant distinguish themselves with special hero powers, it remains unclear what makes Fortnite’s Ballistic mode stand out from the competition beyond unique Fortnite cosmetics. However, I and many others will certainly be watching closely to find out.
